    Hi all

i have a feeling my spark plug is breaking down under compression because my zip only starts for a phew secconds and once i touch the throttle it starts dying. i want to change out the whole ignition system but dont want to buy parts that i dont need so what parts controll spark and not just starting eg: is it necessary to buy a new stator plate?

have you looked at your battery and regulator?
i had the same problem with my keeway but when the AA looked at it the battery was fine but was slowly dying as the regulator had a faulty wire

if your brand new battery has gone flat then it could be your regulator. Have you tried kick starting it and does it start up?

not unless you have a metre/ reader to measure the voltage of you battery as you try and start up
other than that, all i can say is get it to a garage

Don't listen to him. He obviously has no idea what he is talking about. I hate it when people give incorrect advice. If you don't know the BASICS about engines or scooters, DON'T ANSWER.

The battery/regulator has nothing to do with the ignition system.

If the engine is dying when you give it throttle I am guessing it has something to do with your fuel system. As long as it starts and idles fine then the ignition system and compression should be just fine.

Take off your carb and clean it out. There might be something in the carb that blocks off the fuel supply when throttle is applied.

    Also check your reed valve.

I had the exact same problem when I bought a "defect" zip 50cc. It would start right up but once you gave it more than 1/4 throttle it would die out. The reason for this was because the reed was bad. It had a small opening in one of the sides (reeds are suppose to be closed 100%). I changed it out and everything was perfect.

    So to sum it up:
    Take off your carb.
    Take off your reed.

Check reed, reed valves on both sides should be closed 100%. If the reed valve looks good, dismantle the carb and clean every single item and put it back together :)
