Hey guys, My Zip 125 recently started bogging on full throttle, its not real bad but its bogging and only just started doing this, I was wondering what the cause of this could be? Could anyone shed some light on what the causes of this are/could be? It is a fully standard 4 stroke 125 zip, thanks.
Thanks for the advice accy, just noticed there is some vibration noise or such coming from the crank casing, mostly just around the engine oil dip stick. As you can tell I am no mechanic, which is why I am asking here
Had it around 8 months or so now, rode it for a few days, went to fit an alarm and noticed how hacked and chopped up the loom was so didn't bother, rode it for another couple days, cdi went so stuck it in the garage and left until last month and got the loom repaired and bought a new cdi. Then I got it all working, engine was good and such, rode it for around just under a month now, couple of miles a day, 2 days back when starting it up I heard some strange noise coming from the variators end(I think its that end) never had the crank casing off, so I just left it to tick over and warm up, the noise seemed to have gone, rode it for around a day, then noticed it suddenly just kinda loosing power and "jerking/bogging" which ever it is called. So today I pulled it out the garage again, same thing, strange noise from near the variator although seems to have got a little louder, when its warmed up you can't hear a thing, so I went for a ride up and down the street and it just randomly starts bogging, maybe its not randomly but I can't seem to pin point when its doing it.
I am not sure I know how to be honest when I've had a problem with a past ride I have just got rid but the with the 125 zip knowing how hard they are to come by I wanted to fix it up into good shape and also learn more about the mechanics of peds. I am confident taking the crank case off, but I've no idea how to get to the variator, I am sure I could figure out putting the belt on, but the rollers are another story. Also what gram rollers are the standard 125's zip?
Thanks for the advice accy, are the zip 50's and 125's variator tools the same? I can go borrow a 50s one, saves me buying one
The only info i can find on rollers size/weight for the 125cc is from the 4t model, 19 x 15.5, 9.8gram, 6 off. Give A-Pedstop a call to confirm though. This size is pretty much the standard for zips, although obviously weights change across the engine size.
Hi Steve, I've been trying to research the rollers too, but I seem to have come up with, they are 19 x 17, 8.6gram, 6 off. I got my information from here: http://beedspeed.com/html-pages/variator-roller-weights-chart.htm and here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121242245569?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 Would you agree they are the correct sizes? Edit: Also they only do 125 4 strokes on the zips
don't listen to him, it's worth checking them because it may be part of/or the problem, even if they're not causing it to bog then you can rule that out and you know it'll be something else.
Got ya, any specific brands on rollers I should be buying? also should I change the variator sliders with the rollers? Should I change the belt along with rollers?(makes sense) if so, again, should I be buying a specific brand? Thanks lads.
Rollers are all the same, some just wear faster than others, you shouldnt need to replace the sliders. You might aswell replace the belt, i recommend malossi for belts.
You were lucky then, i just changed the rollers in a zip that had the same symptoms as bogging, I knew that the carb was clean as it had been done about two weeks previously along with a new fuel filter, checked the rolllers and massive flats on them. Changed them for new and went as good as ever.
Did you put 9.8gram in a 125's zip Steve? I am unsure if I should maybe get lighter/heavier ones while there going to be replaced. If 8.6/8.7gram is the standard should I just stick with them or should I try others like the 9.8gram? I've also seen 7.2 and a lot of others which can fit, was just looking for the best options. Basically I am going to buy some of these: http://stores.ebay.co.uk/readspeedscooters/Malossi-Rollers-19-x-17-/_i.html?_fsub=461978017 I just need to figure out what gram I should get
I put 8.6 in, but please remember this was a 100cc zip and not the 125cc. I dont think there is any difference really, but just for you to be aware. If you are not sure of roller weights/sizes then ask the shop for their knowledge, also a lot of people mix weights, i.e, 3 of 8.6 and 3 of 9.8, or whatever takes their fancy to achieve what they believe is a smoother acceleration throughout the rev range. It really is trial and error with roller weights, and a lot depends on your setup, whether its standard or got a different pipe, variator, clutch etc.
Thanks Steve. Mine is fully standard yeah, I did ask one person who sold on eBay(described as standard 125 rollers) they replied saying they are 9g rollers, so I guess 8.6-9 is around correct.
Run with it, i don't think you'll go wrong with those weights. Buy a decent brand though, malossi are the better makers, cheapo rollers don't last. I posted a thread on them not long back http://www.scootershack.co.uk/threads/cheapo-rollers.32723/
Interesting read, cheers. So basically malossi is where the best parts are at? Should I just be buying both malossi rollers and belt? I was looking at a polini kevlar belt, which would you recommend? both are same price around £40
