So today I was messing about on one of my panels and I had already put a layer of black paint on it and then some primer after it wanted smoothing out after anyways cos the paint was just filling some deep scuffs but any way as I put the primer on over the still not 100% dry black paint the primer started to crackle over the top of the black and looked as I'n the photos sorry about the quality the real question is as I was gonna paint panels black with green on other places is there any way I could get the same effect as this properly as this was due to bad painting error ? as I think this would look quite good with the little crackles of green showing out behind the black topcoat
the cracks are either the under layer of paint wasnt dry before applying the top coat OR theres a difference in the type of paint between the 2 causing a reaction....in which case you'd need to apply isolator (barrier coat) before applying primer and top coat/ base coat & laquer
paints are usually buit up of a few coats 1)isolator...to stop the new stuff reacting with the original 2) primer..undercaot to give a key for the main coat and provide a surface to be smoothed 3) then either a single top coat OR a base coat which will be a colour without any protective properties 4) laquer (also known as clear) to be used as the protective layer for the base coat obviously therese a possibility of adding extra coats such as an initial etching primer when used on bare metal and then pearl coats, cameleons, and metal flakes over the top of base coats to give effects before the clear is applied
Dumb question maybe but why does paint react like that? Its happened to me before and apart from being crackled like that it was actually quite nice and smooth. Im pretty sure I've seen it happen whilst drying aswell
Its the different chemicals that make up each paint. As the paint dries the solvents used to make it evaporate or change causing heat (chemical reaction) which eats into the layer below...this gives the cracked effct
OK thanks for the reply's people basically the black and the primer where two different types of paint the black was only touch dry when i sprayed the primer (i know this is the wrong way round but i was just filling out the scuffs in the panel to be sanded later) but i actually quite like what happened with the paint and was wondering if i could achieve this again (purposely) but with a green under coat so the crackles would be under the black top coat ? as this would bring some more colour in around my seat area with seat being black and rest of outer panels being black thanks for the help
