So i Start college next month but turn 17 in April so im going to be sticking with my Yamaha neos 50 until then, im going to need something more reliable

Looking at 4 stroke tbh for reliability

Looking at cbr125 and yzf-125 but im cash struck being a student its horrible

    15 miles too college
    15 miles back

5 days a week so this is where a rs125 wouldn't work

    Thoughts opinions

I dont really want a scooter as im looking to move onto bigger bikes once i get a job to take my test , no disrespect to scooter riders

    Thanks

how come you think a RS125 couldnt handle a 30 mile round trip ?

Because its a sporty engine for a 125 and requires alot of maintainence

I dont want the gearbox falling out every month when i have college everyday :(

Rs125's do require more maintenance than a 4 stroke 125cc, but changing the gearbox once a week is a bit of an exaggeration dont you think ???

like everything in life it depends how its treated, a well treated RS125 will probably need a top end freshen up every 20,000km, which is a lot of 30 mile round trips...

If you want swiss watch reliability then a 4 stroke will be the one to go for, will last for years, you might get bored of going 65 mph flat out and being bullied around by kids on 70cc scooters though...

I have to think sensible really not just go speed speed speed, i doubt i would do more than 60mph on the way to college anyway but i know speed is useful for overtaking etc

What about a Cagiva mito, never heard of Cagiva but people are saying there better than rs125's like i said im only gonna have about £1000 so its not like im getting anything new

    cheers

The problem with buying RS125's and Cagiva Mito's is the owner(s) that had it before you,

quite often people inherit other peoples abuse and neglect, when buying high performing 2 strokes...after all, dont most people buy a bike, thrape it everyday then sell it just before the problems start...

if your thinking sensibly...its gonna be a 4 stroke, they have pretty much bullet proof reliability ;)

CG125 is one of the most reliable and cheapest bikes, ever to be built, bland to look at....... might be a Honda, but no CBR lookalike. :)

Simple fact is CBR125's and R125's are bloody expensive. Expensive new so expensive second hand.

They do loads of miles to the gallon and never break... Not sure how bad the insurance is on them though.

I don't really see the point personally. They are slow but try and look fast, you have to change gear all the bloody time and you lose all the practicality of a scooter for no performance increase.

Plus if you're planning on doing you're bike test soon and you live somewhere that you might actually get insured on a proper bike then you might as well save the cash for something better/bigger.

It can be seen in a few ways i suppose, works out at about 600 a year for me to insure a cbr125 (if) i was 17, the way i see it is i can earn my ncb and valuable experience on a sound 125 that isnt going to break the bank and then do my das when 18

I know this is a scooter forum and im probably pissing you guys off with all the bike talk i shall not post anymore bike stuff only about my scoot :)

    Thanks

Ouch. £600 a year is pretty bad.

Just to let you know I have owned a 4 stroke 125 geared bike so i'm speaking from experience. ;)

We do have a bike section so I'm going to move this topic there!

to be fair, you pretty much have to change gear all the time on any sports bike with a smaller capacity then a 1000cc.

the rs and mito aren't good "learner" bikes so id go with one of the 4 strokes
    (cg, cbr, yzf-r, ybr, etc)

An RS125 would be fine to use everyday.. People over exaggurate how bad they actually arnt. Half the time I just think they are jealous their 125 only produces 10bhp and yours makes 25-30bhp (rs125s DONT produce 33bhp standard.)

The only things you have to remember is:

    - Rebuild plastic gearbox & clutch every 10,000kms
    - New crank bearings and seals, topend rebuild every 10,000- 15,000kms
    - Clean powervalve regulary if fitted.
    - Keep on top of the carb settings.

My cousin has one, and has had it for a couple of years. He uses it almost everyday too. He says the only real downside is you MUST warm up the engine for atleast 10-15mins before setting off, and these bikes dont run well anywhere below 8,000rpm because they love to be thrashed.
Its NEVER left him stranded.. Yes its not started once or twice before but NEVER broken down whilst riding.
His bike has had a full engine rebuild & gearbox rebuild ONCE in 3 years.

People should actually own one before cussing that they are un-reliable, when they aint.

Fire's one was the biggest pile of shit. Pretty much everything broke for no reason at all. Starter motor, all the electrics, etc etc.

And this was on a low mileage bike with good previous owners in good condition!

any bike is reliable if a mechanically experienced/mind person is the owner.... the fact is the RS125 is advertised as learner bikes and they are not learner friendly for more reasons then reliability :good:

Phew, I thought I was gonna get "merked up" for saying what I said above. Yeh my cousin is abit of a perfectionist he keeps on top of everything thats why his RS works well. It does cost a bomb to keep maintained but hey, if you wanna go fast you gotta pay the price :)

Fire was unlucky IMO. His RS must have been raped from the showroom by the previous owner(s), the electrics wont be brilliant on any italian bike or car, look at Alfa's, old lambo's and lancia's, all have bad electrical points that corrode quickly and are rust buckets in general. The newest lambo's are only half decent because Audi make them nowerdays. Even piggys and gillys have electrical falts from time to time.

The newest Jap 125's look cheaply made to me, Ive seen a few yzf125's now and they almost look chinese quality, same with the YBR125 and New shape honda CG125. Far better off with an older CG125, YBR125 if you want reliability.. The CBR125R doesent look too bad, shame the engines are gutless but they do run forever.

You cant win nowerdays with brand new small cc bikes!

Yup I totally agree with you there! But I didnt mean looks I ment quality, sorry I was typing away like I was having a real life conversation haha. "Doesent look too bad" as in build quality doesent look bad if you get what I mean.

Have you seen the CBF125?? I almost THREW UP! The first time I saw one.

That exhaust looks like it came straight off a Baotian chinese thingy. I see a Yamaha YZF125R yesterday outside a bike shop, 2010 plate.. And some of the chrome bits had rust spots on it already. :(

And they charge over 3 grand for one of these?

If I were gonna get a 125 geared bike heres my list of choice:

    - Cagiva mito
    - Cagiva planet
    - Aprilia RS125 old shape
    - Yamaha DT125 2T
    - Yamaha TZR125

If it must be 4T then:

    - Honda CG125 old shape
    - Honda CBR125
    - Honda XR125
    - Yamaha YBR old shape
    - Suzuki GN125

Cant think of anyothers without going chinesey.
