Ok so I did a search but couldn't find anything so apologies if this has been done a million times!! Have a new barrel and piston, rings etc on the Aprilia and am in the breaking in process. Have been advised not to go over 40mph and keep it that way for the first 500 miles. Is this the standard procedure or is there a better/quicker way of doing this? Thanks for any help. Jon
different people do it differnt ways, my person approach is this: start up first time and let it idle and get warm. then turn it off and let it cool down, start again and let it get warm again , then have a little ride around taking it easy, maybe 1/4 throttle tops. then, i go up to half throttle for about 400km or so, running it a bit rich, the after that its good to go. but i know that the manufacturers just start it up straight from new and give it full throttle from cold for a few mins, lots of people swear that this is the best, but im doubtful, ive rebuilt a lot of customers bikes because they have been run on full gas from cold and its worn the rings/seized... each to ones own as they say
i had a new malossi 172 air cooled kit fitted to my typhoon last week and was advised by a local scooter tuner to keep the revs as low as possible for the first 50 miles, then for the next 50 miles just ride it as you would but not using full throttle or going over 50mph. after this you are good to go
nice and gentle to 30mph and don't exceed it for 300 miles + letting it idle on stand, warming it up etc is my preffered way of running a engine in. I think stevep does that too.
Thanks boys, I will take it easy for a few weeks (do about 80 miles a week) then ease it up gradually. Don't fancy another bill like the last one!!
Yup. It's a ball ache but I tell all my customers the same. I'm still running in one of my own. Ran it for 3 days on and off, idling on the stand for 10 to 20 minutes at a time, let it cool right down again, til it used three tanks of petrol, then took it for a run not exceeding 30mph. It has crept above a little and i nearly hit 40 until i looked down. But doing it this way, I've not had one come back yet; especially when i tell them that I don't warranty pistons and barrels under any circumstances.
ive said the same to customers steve and they still come back with the 4 point score.... kids here just dont care because their parents pay for everything.... im still running my tomos in actually, cant remember when i changed the barrel, but i still havent had it at full throttle. must be 4 months now i think
