Right I just slapped on a ac 172 kit to my typh it came with reeds and gaskets put it all on now I can't get it to fire it's got a spark and petrol running to the carb it fired up for a second once but cut off I duno what's the problem any help ?
98 jet, open filter, 25mm carb = too much air. try it with the standard filter on first, or put your hand over the back of the carb and crank it for 2 or 3 seconds to pull the fuel through. Don't rev it, let it idle for a minute or so. Then rev it gently, with the open filter it will probably bog and stall with a 98 in it. Upwards we go.
Or you could put your standard 20.5 carb back there with the standard jet, it'll go just as well for the..................RUNNING IN PERIOD!!!!
Problem is I don have my old carb an can't get the airbox to go on this one because I got a straight inlet I put my hand over the carb and it almost started twise it turned over a few times and cut out
Just got it started for around 30 seconds I let it it run it sounded like it was running abitfast and I could here like a dinking sounded like something metal pinging then it cut out won't start
that sound is called pinking. have you set the squish? sounds like it needs setting up, and sounds a bit like you need more than internet help.... where about are you and maybe someone from the forum could help?
What do you mean by set the squish and I'm in east London the sound could be from the engine or just from something rattling I'm not sure and I finally got it startEd with a 95 jet and running but it's running fast like I got the throttle pulled abut so I cut it out
Problem solved i tried a diff carb from my other bike still same issue so worked my way down and changed the reed valves and reeds to the original and now got it running nice and smooth
hmmmm..... you should do some reading about 2 stroke engines, it wont last long if its not set up right
Yh I have done quite abit of reading and know what I'm doing pretty much mechanically I've built a few bike but obviously you can always learn something new but it's up and running nicely the clinking noise was coming from a screw stuck behind the exhaust heat shield
i would suggest you still check your squish, if you just put the kit on it could be wrong and check your spark plug colour too just to be sure its running nice
Kook how do I do a squish test and can you tell me abit about the tunning what jets I should use it's got a 25ml with an open air filter still running it with oil pump because don't have the time to be mixing up petrol and oil and I'm gonna check my plug in the morning
The oil pump is no problem, just advance it a little. The squish area is a band around the edge of the head that squeezes air/petrol mix into the center of the head around the plug for a clean ignition. Check it by using a length of solder folded over a couple of times at the end, measure squish at points 3-9 on a clock face by poking the solder in so it hits the side of the bore, turn engine over so it squashes solder the measure it's thickness with vernier. it need's to be about 1.0 mm ish, not really any smaller than 0.8 mm/0.9 mm, alter it by using a thicker/thinner base gasket. Not a major job and can pay dividends on performance and life of the barrel. As for jetting I'd start with a 115? and work down, I don't want to bore you but it all depends on where you live in the country, places like yorkshire high ground places will use a slightly smaller main jet than areas like london, altitude effect's jetting as air is thinner the higher you are. I've had engines tested on a rolling road up yorkshire, set up nicely but as soon as get home up-jet a size or two, you have to run the biggest jet it can without bogging down as they say on full throttle, when on full throttle it should pull clean and keep revving, if it fluff's a little, shut off slightly and if it clears and runs better then jet is to big. ALWAYS start with BIG main jet and work down! Don't just put a big jet in and think it's ok, try every jet you can get, try it twice to gauge how it runs, plug need's to be a very dark chocolate brown edging on black.
