Dood day ,I'm getting ready to install malossi cyl. kit and mikuni carb 24mm,my scoot is already equip.w/ PM59 exhaust. I am looking for any more advice on getting the most out of this combo/ maybe porting or larger carb.? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. You guys in the UK are more knowledgeable about the 172 kits than I am. Thank You.
lose the mikuni 24mm if you can, stick with a dellorto as there tried and tested. easiest wat to gain power from the malossi kit is to port/flow the casings + barrrel, but make sure someone with experience carries out the work or it'll soon ruin your new kit leaving it useless if the work is wrong. you may want to consider a pm tuning high compression head, opinions are mixed as afew have been known to leak, however i have opted to use 1 on my project bike.
Thanks for the info. Tha reason I chose the mikuni was because of jetting,we have parts for these carbs unlike the dellorto. Is there that much horsepower to be found in case/cylinder porting? Thank You.
Also, I purchased this setup as a kit, what roller weights should I be close to in weight w/ a ported case/cylinder?
if you have parts for the mikuni then keep it (can be hard to set-up apparently) porting/flowing will make more power than every bolt on part together if carried out right, certain bikes that used to race in the x-race series where only running a 172cc, pm59, 25mm carb and a silly amount of porting and where making near 30bhp. the labour can be expensive though, and i would definatly recommed changing your crankshaft if the bike has covered good milage. as for roller weights, 14grams is always a good starting point for a tuned set-up
mikuni's are good carbs but hard to get bits for over here and setting up is a pain because of this fact. if you have good parts supply then use them as you can get good gains once setup correctly. switch to a pwk 28 if you can.. bigger if you can figure an inlet manifold for it. as for more power, there are small barrel mods wich make alot more power, like enlarging the stub/port exit diameter. works wonders and should hit a good 24bhp if setup correctly. there are more gains to be had in other areas tho so get it together and setup and see if you need a bit more poke. gear up would be a wise investment tho
Thank You, I spoke w/ Andy at PSN he suggests a 55mil crank-is there a patcular brand to look for? Also I have a 125 gear my scoot is a 180 tall gear allready. I don't do any freeways w/ the scoot, so its mostly 100km per hr or less. Im looking for better acceleration. I have seen many of the areas that people have ported on w/ the 180 cylinder but don't wish to go overboard and render it useless. I will probably degree it and go from there w/ a mild clean up. From what I read in my area the 70cc kits are putting out good power. This scoot is not as quick from the line as my kitted Super 9, so I'm going to fix that. Also should I leave the Ign. alone or look for substitute? Thank You.
Re: X race vid. not sure about purchasing vids...i mainly just give you-tube a view for my scooter fix
daves right theres not alot of footage around of x-race any more if you check the site there is afew pics you might like http://www.x-race-uk.info/interactive.php ste.
psn arnt the best people to speak to about tuning as there main tuner left... 55's are good but need ALOT of barrel mods/timing/duration changes to make the most of them. the bgm 52 is a nice strong crank that can be used witrh the stock malossi port map altho the malossi barrel can give out ALOT more power than stock as the port arangment is a little lazy. you should smile from ear to ear once you install ands setup all your new goodies tho. just get it together then go from there. if its not enuff power then fit a new crank with some crankcase flowing/tidying and open out the port feeds a little. if im in a good mood i might even give you a port map for 5% power gain
Thanks for the reply, sounds like tried and true tuning-PSN states that I would need to adjust cylinder height w/ gasket/shim. No problem,I'm looking for the most bang for the buck. I feel that if I'm going to pull the cyl. why not pull entire engine and swap crank also. I know from crank swaps w/ Harley Dav. that V-twins respond well to extra crank throw,I figured this 180 would also share the same results? Who seems to have the 2 strokes by the ears in the UK? Is your port map a degreed layout or finish blending,my main concern is that this cyl. is a chromed bore and my not take well to grinding which might cause the chrome to peel?????
if you are very gentle with the dremmel it can be dome without the bore flaking, however its wise to just accept that if it happens you'll need to re-nicasil it. there is a lack of good 2 stroke tuners in the UK, the main one is stan stevens but he dosn't touch scooters, specialises in yamaha and suzuki engines. I have seen some of minor's results and they are pretty immense.
