Dam thing broke down today and just perhaps if I have some tolls it would not have been and issue. Heading home on a 70 mile round trip still around 15 miles to go and the thing sounded like a chain saw, I thought that cant be me. yep! pull over quick and kill the engine. It would free wheel OK with no noise but start the engine and there is a clatter of metal on metal. Pushed it a mile or so before giving up and asking a guy if I could borrow a few tools. Took off the side cover and found the variator loose and the fins catching the plate around the kick start. Still no 19mm spanner to tighten it up but an adjustable spanner. Did it up best I could passed back the tools and left the side cover off, managed 1/2 mile at most when the variator side with the fins is rolling down the road, the nut and washer gone for ever. Nothing else for it but to push the bike a bit more until I decide I can leave it in a small estate, chain it up and call the wife for a pick-up. That's another thing I will never hear the last of. Home for tea, time in the garage on the lathe and make a universal holding tool, bits off the seized engine, lock-tight and back out courtesy of the Mrs back to the bike. 15 minutes later on the way home again. Must get some tools, or pay for recovery, or both! Adrian
I am old, but a complete tool set is in each of my vehicles, specifically designed for the needs of that vehicle. My china scoot has a can of lighter fluid and a match in the tool kit if all else fails.
You need to get an impact wrench in your garage for variator duty! It will save you money and hassle in the long run!
I have one, but the torque setting is not that high really to need one on this. The paperwork says 5 to 6 kgf -m which equates to around 4ib per foot. Not a lot at all. Adrian
You are correct scubadiver it should not have come off. The threads are fine, there is some signs of wear on the splines of the aluminium pulley, but can not tell at this stage if the wear was there before, to cause the problem, or are there now because it became loose before falling off. The safest thing to do is replace the pulley or variator complete, if I can find a matching one with the dogs for the kick start. Think I will still use lock-tight on the threads. Adrian p.s.small Draper socket set at Asda for around £7 to £8 still need a few extra to give 17 and 19 mm, but is a good start for a small set.
