    Old school!!! When I wer a lad....the wepon of choice was fiesta xr2, escort mk1/2, astra gsi, nova sr,Opel manta, Capri,

    Or (I hate the term) "original mini", for me there has been "the mini" and later a "small BMW" (never deserved to be called mini! Don't even come close to a mini!!! And I've owned both! )
    My current car is an 18year old Toyota hilux surf! It ain't "old school"
    ....it's "RETRO" !!!

    Kreg Astra Belmont 1.4 went like stink for a 1.4, wish I could find another one of those in decent nick. The MX5 MK1 will do for now though, just need summer to get here.

    I know what you mean about the mini, they just abusing the name and heritage like the current 'Lotus' F1 team. But they are not so bad really for a modern hatch, a little fashion focused but the John Cooper Works is insane.

    Got to love the mk1 clios!

    I've had 5 of them (plus 1 extravan, 3 R5's and a megane lol)

    Not keen on the kit but standard bumpers on and lowered it will look good.

    Is it a 1.1, 1.4, 1.8SPI or 1.8 RSI?

    Wait a year or so then swap in an 1.8 (good for 170bhp) or 2.0 16v (good for 200bhp) and it will really move...plug and play engine conversion on the phase 1 clios like yours and phase 2 as well. Even 1.1 and 1.4 can be modified for more power without much expense, provided you can find the parts these days of course.

    Check out http://www.retro-renault.com/forums/ if you ever need help with it.

    Its a proper site with people who REALLY know about these cars.

    Cheers mate, i have signed up to some other clio forum, biut they just seem to bolt bits on and pay other people to do their work(with the exception of about 3 people).

    I think it's a 1.2 :glare: ( drives like a 50cc)

    And i have enquired about engine swaps and what years would be compatable witht he original running gear , but haven't really got any clear answers .

    Have you personaly done one of these conversions ?

    Let me guess - is it cliosport.net you've joined?

    Wasting your time there mate - those guys are mk2 (post 98) clios only and have been for ages...going back a few years (like about 5 years!) there used to be a good mix of people on there but when the 172 clio came out a bit of snobbery arose between the mk1 and mk2 peeps so the mk1 guys left and started their own forums.

    Anyway no i've not personally done an engine swap - i got a guy on the forum i mentioned above to do mine as i wasn't sure on the wiring. That was putting a clio 1.8 engine into a Renault 5 though so the wiring would have been different;

    http://www.retro-renault.com/forums/renault-1993-1996/1210-r5-rsi.html

    I sourced the parts though...i was also one of the first people to have a 1.8 16v clio with no powersteering (more power) and also retro fit williams wide track (wider front suspension for better handling) to a non williams.

    If i were you i'd sign up to that forum and introduce yourself - feel free to mention me (u33db) as well.

    In regard to an engine swap on your car (thats "plug and play" and worth doing) the following engines will fit;
    - 1.8 8v F3P RSI engine (110bhp)
    - 1.8 16V F7P engine (137bhp)
    - 2.0 16v F7R engine (150bhp)

    By "plug and play" i mean the engine will fit in and the wiring loom will have the corrrect plug to match your car...no "rewiring needed".

    Consider the uinsurance costs though before doing an engine swap!

    In most cases it'll be cheaper to sell your car and but the more powerful version...

    BTW here is a video of the speedo of the speedo of my R5 from the project thread i poosted above;

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvraqUzQlao

    Thats going from a 60bhp 1.4 R5 engine to a 110bhp 1.8 RSI engine.

    Nippy!

    may be able to sort something in the way of the williams bits (bonnet, skirts, bumpers) altho the arch's are diff i think?
    can deffo sort out a better engine for it tho, GOOD few kicking about (these take a 5 turbo engine, any megane engine prittymuch so 1.6 1.8 2.0 all turbo able :D, obviously the bigger clio varients and theres a few others you can get in there.. dont even think about sp[ending a penny tunning a 1.2.... for 50 quid you can get another 1.4 engine and just sling it in in an afternoon LOL

    it's a 1.4 , didn't even know untill i looked on the log book. Thinking to run it till it's dead then might do something with it , like the 2l megane lump

    Aye, williams have wider rear arches.

    TBH i wouldn't bother will the williams bodywork because...its not a williams.

    You can do good things on the 1.4 as well without an engine swap though.

    Decat pipe would be the first thing i'd stick on. The cats are really restrictive on these things if not blocked now due to age so getting rid will add about 5bhp and cost under £40. Since yours is on a K plate you may even be ok come mot time (iirc cats are required on post 93 cars) with it still fitted.

    Could also get a 1.8 8v SPI throttle body and airbox - about a tenner from a scrappy. Inlet manifold will need ported but otherwise it bolts right on and will suck in much more air as the standard butterfly is about the size of a 50p! Will add a few more horses.

    Also get rid of PAS if its got it - you'll need a manual steering rack, column and aux belt but scrappy should see them bought for undeer £75. Will rev its arse off with that fitted as theres less load on the engine.

    Also give it a good service, making sure you change the fuel filter at the rear (most people don't bother) and they become blocked

    A 1.4 with that lot will hassle the likes of VTRs and nearly anything up to 110bhp. Not bad when you're starting out with 75/80bhp.

    Engine swaps are the way to big power though...5 R5 turbo sounds great but are fragile so you really want 1.8 16v (clio or R19) or 2.0 16v (williams engine or early megane coupe) power...anything else isn't worth the hassle given what the 1.4 can do. Volvo 1.7 turbo engine also fits but isn't plug and play and isn't a great engine.

    This heap is doing my nut in , in the last month it's had new rear shocks/dampers , front wheel bearings , service so plugs , oil and filter , new pads and shoes all round .

    Decided not to throw any unnecessary money at it and just do wat needs doing .

    Thanks for the advice u33db , will definitely bear that in mind .

    i can get williams stuff if you want it, a m8 has 3 of em. BUT its not gonna be cheap. repro stuff is cheap enough these days.

    fuck all the above and just sling a ren 5 turbo engine in there. bolts straight in, carb, 5 wires, exhaust bolts on. sorted
