Looking to start a 172 some time soon, but instead of going for horsepower I wanted to just forget the hp and go for torque.

So yea, if all you want is torque would something like 172 kit, long stroke crank, stubby manifold, carb etc. Idealy Id have useable power basically any time, not too worried about top speed just having a punchy fucker.

On a different note are 180 cases really worse than 125 ones for building a 172? Remember hearing this somewhere here but cant find the post.

    Cheers!

opk, run a stock pipe with a 25mm carb.... anything with that setup is torquey and punchy as fuck. can port for torque rather than hp (how crorssers are ported_)

Cheers for that, I think it was you who was saying a while back how 180 cases are worse than 125 ones as a base to tune on.

That setup with the stubby manifold should be pretty fun. Judging by what your saying you could do some port work purely to maximise torque. Has anyone ever put a crosser barrel on a ped, iv seen an nsr barrel on one before that seemed pretty nuts but i seem to remember it was too high revving for the pipe he was using.

I dunno I was thinking torque is more useable than a silly amount of horsepower. Not sayin I wouldnt like a 33bhp runner but torque is just fun power!

Got the idea after reading about some race supermoto, they were saying hp sells bikes, torque wins races. Probably more so on supermotos though

horsepower is an equasion of torque....
torque is a single turning force of an engine, hp is the max force generated at the best performing rpm. as in when the rngines running at the sweet spot how much torque in however revoloutions equates to hp.

tbh a torquey setup isnt really any use with an auto setup. you can trim the transmission to constantly be at the sweet spot of hp at any speed so torque is no use

Fair enough, what du mean when you say trim the transmission?

diff weight rollers.. diff springs, diff spacers in front/behind the variator... whatever it takes to keep the revs constant and hard pulling
