Dave here, nice to meet you all. Used to scooter about 14 years ago, did the usual marriage/kids thing. 40 this Tuesday, time for a new one!
Thanks mate! I rode a 50cc Derbi Vamos (!!) back in the 90's...great little commuter scoot. Also had a CG125, as I took a CBT anyway. Now I have an 8 mile round trip commute, 4 days a week. Currently using my 2.0TDCi Grand C-Max, which isn't the most efficient over a short journey. I'm trying to decide - buy a 50cc and no 'L' plates, or take a CBT and ride a 125cc again. Any suggestions? I've considered numerous machines - Yamaha Neo's, Typhoon, some sort of Peugeot, Chinese imports and everything in-between.
Well you could get a 50 and save doing a cbt. Maybe tune the 50 so its a little quicker. Or just go for a stock 125 really. 4 strokes are very reliable. Ya never know you might get a 50 and then end up wanting a 125. So u just got to decide that yourself. Mopeds are deffently going to save you on fuel anyway eh
welcome along dave. ive just done the same thing although im abit younger id say if your commute is reletivly flat, go with a 2 stroke 50. you can do it without a cbt (presume your car test was before feb 2001) insurance will be next to nothing. and fuel is a damn sight less than any car would atleast remove the variator restrictor as 30mph is a drag. (although if you do it on car licence your meant to be restricted to 30 so do that at ones own risk) plus by not having to do the cbt every 2 years, it will pay for insurance for that year if you do have substantial hills then 125 all the way. on my 50cc commute i can see 25 which isnt too bad (especially as abit further up the road i can scrape 40) if you need to go up a noticable hill im seeing 17, which is a pain.
I actually asked about that at the local Yamaha dealer this morning. The guys said "it's illegal, but firstly, the police can't check if you're de-restricted at the road side and secondly, no offence, but you look old enough to not need L plates". There's times when being older and having a beard pays dividends....!
I was offered a Neo's 50cc 4-stroke with 300 miles on it for £1400, with free helmet, jacket and gloves this morning. Good deal?
i wouldnt get a used helmet, but if its all new sounds a good deal. however being new to all this myself. no idea about the bike itself. im 27 so not exactly a young scally wag myself also i only spent 300 quid on my ped
It's a brand new helmet, jacket and gloves, from a Yamaha main dealer. Seems like a reasonable deal to me. Anyone know if Yamaha 50cc four strokes can be derestricted? I know the two strokes can, not sure about the four strokes....
sounds a good deal from a stealer id presume they all can be, it could be costly though as i think the newer ones are electronically limited. maybe have a word with the stealer see how much theyd charge to do it
First of all. Welcome.... I've got a 50cc, put a 70s kit and it keeps up with 125s cheaper to insure and everything else!
hi dave. welcome to the club, i agree with conver93. 8 miles round trip isnt very far, a 50 should cope fairly easily, but a few tweaks should make it a quicker journey.. http://www.racing-planet.co.uk/cyli...fc579713d154c6fc9a44d1d35b70ef41#.UaJxj9Lvslk looks like a lot of wonga for a 70 kit... http://www.racing-planet.co.uk/vari...fc579713d154c6fc9a44d1d35b70ef41#.UaJydNLvslk just a little cheaper.. plenty of peeps who can help around here..
U could always look elsewhere and find a neos alot cheaper. Member dealer prices are always going to be more ecpensive than a prive sale. Helmet and jacket free!!! Just to get u to buy the bike mate. Have a look around first as im sure theres a few bargains to be had. Then if nothing pops up then resort to the dealer. Good luck
Can even beat some cars haha, getting cocky now, but people in 4 wheels don't understand power to weight ratio. My ped weighs next to nothing, and it's got more power than it would standard lol,
...been having a good look around. Anyone know anything about Neco or CPI scooters? I'm quite a fan of the 'retro' look, but a Vespa ET2 is big money for a new one...
I've decided to take the 125cc route, so I'm doing my CBT next Tuesday. I've had some insurance quotes and having zero bike no-claims makes it proper expensive, so I'm finding. Anyone know any good, reasonably priced scooter insurance companies?
All depends on age, what cover you want (if fully comp the more voluntary excess you put the cheaper itll be) post code, where you store your bike, how many miles you plan to do annually, what security devices you have, what you plan to do eg: commuting, social riding etc, what you do for a living, how much you put the bike is worth and a few other things... My cheapest quote was with MCE and they give you free breakdown cover
Well, today's the day...CBT day! Once that's done, it's bike-shopping time. I'm going to wander around the local dealers tomorrow and see what takes my fancy. I'm quite liking a new Honda Vision 110 at the moment....
