my computers reaaally slow and takes like 10 mins to start up before i can do anything so i thought i would get some more RAM :nerd:. anyway i found that my computer can only handle a max of 1gb of ram?? which is s**t, because i already have a 500 and 250, so what would happen if i replaced the 250 with a 1gb? so i had a total of 1500mb?

    anyone know??

    cheers

Defrag  Go to my computer > Right click you C: Drive > Click tools at the top > Then Click the 'De fragment Now' Button.

Then when that opens click on your C drive and click the De fragment button at the bottom :) And delete some stuff you don't need that'll help aswell

It can slow your computer down having to much memory for the computer to read.

well i only got 5gb free from my 70gb hard drive :emb:.

i think the main thing slowing it down is norton secruitiy, as after i log on i have to wait for norton to appear in the toolbar (with can be like 10 mins or more....) before i can really do anything and the the whole time norton is loading, the harddrive led is near solid, and im sure i got told in IT that its slow because its used up all the ram and has the too use the harddrives memory, which takes longer to read.

You can have as much as shit in your hard drive and have a good ram and it will open with no problems

take the 250 and the 500 out and put 1 gb on each slot and you will have 2gb ram and it will open the computer with EASE..... also i would take all the important documents out and format your hard drive to clear of any viruses which sounds like you got virus problem more than hard drive problem...

Even the oldest mother board can handle a minimum 1GB on each slot...

I know but i was going to be kind and prove it to him with manufacture specs and a link to a matched pair.

Long boots can be caused by plenty of things... Virus's, lots of startup programs and services, the hard drive in need of a defrag, really bad computer hardware specifications, a slow old hard drive on the way out, etc etc.

You can run two 1GB DDR PC3200's fine with your motherboard. All that will happen is they will run at a slightly lower speed than they could do but you will have more RAM.

Only problem is that for some unknown reason old DDR ram is actually more expensive than DDR2 ram. You're looking at about £25 for a matched pair of 512mb sticks to make up 1GB or about £45 for two 1GB matched sticks. :msn1:
