I have been considering this for a while now... adding a 17.5mm carb on to my Aerox. This is the one that I’m looking at:

    http://www.pedparts.co.uk/product/123/175mm-yamaha-aerox-carb-phbn

But before I go for it i have a few questions:

    • What other parts will i need?
    • Is it an easy job (straight swap, obviously jetting)?
    • Will it really give any gains in performance?
My Aerox is pretty much standard apart from a polini variator and clutch springs, and is a 2000 plate.

    Thanks in advance!

I can't comment on that actual physical swap, but sometimes you find the throttle cable a little short on other bikes, but a bit of adapting/shortening of the elbow coming out of the carb can do the trick, maybe on yours, you will be alright.

I went from a 12mm on a Runner to 17.5mm and it really was a noticable difference. Some obviously will say min of a 21mm, 24mm even better, but I found the 17.5mm adequate, less is definately a restriction.

    Thanks for the help guys!

It seems to me thats its worth doing, but the only thing stopping me is the fact that im clueless on the matter of the changing the carb over. I would take it to the garage, but they seem to charge ridiculous prices, which strips the benefits of carrying this mod out.

So if anyone has a step to step guide or lives in the Reading area, I would very much appreciate a helping hand!

it is better to have a 6bhp engine running sweet than a 10bhp one, being tempermental, if that is all you have and the pockets aren't deep. I always have at least two bikes on the road and a car, if I mess up a build, it isn't the end of the world for me.

I was going to say do some cosmetic mods, then noticed you don't list an exhaust. Putting a bigger carb on, with no cylinder kit or exhaust, isn't going to make great power gains. If I was you, I would put on a better exhaust.

Thanks for the reply bud. But I forgot to mention the bike has a leo vince tt exhaust on it, which what it came with. Although, its increasingly loud. I did have it repacked about 2 months ago went silent, but now the noise is back. Is it time for a new one?

I'll be able to spare the cost of buying it and fitting it, but I'm not too sure how much longer im going to have the bike, and also the other problem is that its my only means of transport. But surely it can't be such a difficult task, I hear about people taking their carbs off all the time to clean!

Also thanks for that link m1tch, only problem is which carb is the one i need? I ask because from my knowledge most minimotos etc are air cooled. I have a DR50 but sadly the engined siezed aha!

Only the cheap ones are aircooled, my Blata B1 is a 37cc water cooled engine, around 8bhp :) the top spec mini motos from Polini etc cost about 3 grand as they are used in competitive racing.
