What would happen if you tried to kick start a bike with the engine already running. I kick started today and soon after I heard a grinding sound that I never heard before, I got my trouser leg caught on the kick starter and I think I may have pressed down a bit on the kick start lever when i heard it and I'm wondering if that would be the cause? It got me quite alarmed.

That grinding sound would be the teeth of the kickstart bendix engaging with the kickstart washer on the front of the variator.
Not a major issue, will probably just have blunted the edges of them a bit. You'll know if you have done major damage (stripped the teeth completely) because when you use the kickstart it will slip very easily without turning the engine.

Thanks, it was only for maybe a second when my trouser leg got caught on it so hopefully no harm done.
