Okay got my typhoon today, engine sounds sweet in terms of absolutely no rattles or bad noises or inconsisted idleing... BUT It is exceptionally sluggish. Apart from a very small powerband from 12-18mph maybe there is absolutely nothing...and wont go no more than 25mph pretty much... Has a sports exhaust. Now, been told the exhaust was de-restricted so thats out of the way. Would it be fair to say that some idiot who fitted the exhaust didnt use lighter rollers? Because thats all i can think of, and i guess would make sense. The only other concern is there seems to be a bit too much throttle freeplay, could this be related instead?
first things first wiht any bike... give it a service ~(i generally rebuild every part of any ped i buy, even new ones) but you dont need to go to that trouble. whip the inspection pannel out from inside the seat and remove the front clock pannel (where the indicator's are) look for what part of the throttle has the free play (the cable sleeve will be loose at ether the top or the bottom). if its the top (wich it usually is) you need to grab a new throttle cable... but dont worry, wilkensons do a rear brake cable for a pushbike that will fit wiht a tiny mod for 75p the mod in question is slightly enlarging the hole in the splitter where the cable go's in. (its a little smaller to try and stop you using the wrong cable and having to pay piaggio 7 quid for one) now, put the cable into the splitter, (once youve stripped the cable out it willl make sence, the splitter is under the floorboard so inners or belly pan off.... there a pain but you will sus it) but ye, cable into the splitter, then push it through the sleve, then ito the throttle, (the cable is held inside the throttle in a little moving block by a screw, you can see it all from the bottom if yopu twist the throttle)make sure the throttle is closed then pull the throttle cable fairly hard while you tighten the lock screw, now full throttle and cut off the excesss cable.... done as for if its at the other end (carb end) it will ether be the ajusters not wound out enough (simple) or the cable's been fucked about wiht and needs replacing.. its best if you do get the hang of how the pannels go on and off any bike.. id take em off, check EVERYTHING visually (all the hoses/cables/wiring for visual condition) and replace the throttle cable... i carry a spare one everywherre on a typh tbh. but ye... check the transmission, belt could well be worn but more than likely its worn to fuck rollers or the belts past best, could all just be in the wrong order. once youve done a couple things on the bike tho it will be golden, theres not much to a typhoon tbh, verry simple. any problems/anything you dont understand just ask
Cheers minor, that Throttle Cable mod is pretty bloody useful! And yes, i do need to inspect everything on the typh. Fortunately, my dealer is local and has two lads a bit older than me who have a unit down an industrial estate, he said any problems to come to them they'll sort it for free. Throttle cable sounds like something i may do myself - but getting used to panels etc, i'll watch them do it once and i think it should all be pretty straight forward. Thanks for taking the time in terms of the long reply, v. useful
Well Minor, i spoke to the guys i told you about, both agreed rollers. However, on the way back it went into highest gear (rev'd very very low) and eventually cut out and died. Strange thing was i couldnt get it to start again. New Spark Plug seems to have solved that one, and also provided a little more oomfff in acceleration, not much though! Im right in saying the normal size weights are 8.5g? Well it seems they're the one's that have been fitted, but worn quite a bit. So we've gone down to 6.2g.....as the only modification is sports exhaust.
fackinhell 8.5 hock: standard rollers are 6.7 i believe? if its got a sports variator then it will use heavier rollers, but if its standard and still not running well with the 6.2s then try around 5.5
Standard variator mate. But just checked Minors guide on stock roller weights & sizes and the typh 50 is 8.5.... Seems pretty darn heavy to me too..hopefully 6.2 should sort it...the guy who sold me the ped is buying these ones for me so i can always buy a set afterwards if they're no good ;D
need to go over that thing again, the stock rollers are around 7.2 on the newer typhs... they were 8g in the smaller engines (the small rollers)
Oh right, well this is a 1997....So i'm now unsure what the stock rollers are, but hopefully 6.2 should see an improvement.
always forget what you think you know and just check whats in there m8..... weigh them, compair that weight to the performance of the scooter then ajust/order replacment rollers
Fair play, will do. It has been bogging a little bit once it goes into the higher gears, not all the time though, kind of seems like its running lean but that could just be the rollers also couldnt it? I don't want to upjet or anything before ive tried different rollers as that would be illogical!
ye thas it m8, always set the jet slightly bigger than youd expect then do everything else wiht rollers... if it was fueling it would be constant... sounds like you sussed the prob, probably just flat worn rollers. get it apart and give it a good service
Well. Update For You Minor Had some problems with the bike cutting out once it was warm, but only on occasions, and then it'd be a pain the arse to start again unless i left it an hour or so. New Coil, Generator?! Seems to have sorted that one, first touch elec start no problem! Rollers, went down to 6.2 and it revs nice and constant IMO. This is based on a short test ride, as only got it back 45 minutes ago. Guy i got the ped of has been good to me, done all of this for free! (although maybe should have done haha!) Everything running smooth and i am soon falling in love with the Typh. Not just the engine itself, but it's looks. Was a little bit skeptical at first but lets be honest, this is how a proper scoot built for razzing around should look. Mostly sharp edges etc, but sporty and sleek, and small, just how i want a 50cc to be!
and the typhoon has put another person under its spell..... once you own one, you wonder how you lived wihtout one
Too right! Now it's just a case of a learning experience for me, never having owned a piaggio. Most people say these are easy to work on, so, here's hoping!
Ive never owned a typhoon but recently been looking at pics on here, vids on youtube and looking at brand new typhs in the shop.. Kinda want one now, a brand new one instead of the runner vxr but I doubt it.
