Hello i have bought a Gilera Runner st125 on a 10 plate, The previous keeper said it wouldn't start one day he had changed the starter motor and had the same result, Was advertised and some body went along to view and the big gorilla bend the key in the fuel cap then proceeded to break it completely in the ignition barrel. Anyways I bought it as was sure the original problem was a bendix. Now the key is snapped in the barrel but I have the Red end, if I push this in the ignition hard it makes contact and the bike fires up and runs, now if I change barrels how can i get new keys programmed, Or if i take the part I have and earth it to the frame near the antenna for the immobiliser will it work and just run new barrels and un programmed keys or is there a very simple cheap way around the problem
The red key shouldn't be used all the time, it is the master key, there is a way to program the black keys but you'd need to speak to a old piaggio dealer. You could just change the lock barrels using your original key. Get another barrel, then put your key in it and you'll see the pegs in/out, then grind the tips down flush, wire brush burs off, remove key and the unground pegs will rise up. Try it on an old barrel.
Broken keys are easier to deal with than missing ones, depending on how much is broken off in the barrel. As Marsh says, take the barrel out first. Patience is a virtue in this case. Try a couple of nose pick type pointed tools to see if you can persuade the broken part to start to come out.
Well took the barrel out and got the broken part out, local key doctor says if i get a gilera blank he can cut a key, I asked about re-coding the new key and he said ill use the chip from you broken key. Cant see that working, surely there is away of cloning the key, kind of finding the frequancy in the chip and downloading that int the new key. This is old tech, with cars you could put your new key in the ignition and by switching on and off in a sequence the new key would be programmed.
