right got the runner 172 all back together and started perfectly. ran for about half hour then took it for a zip up the drive. all was fine even lifted the front wheel slightly.
had my dinner then went back out to clean up the tool mountain...
started bike and left running for about 20mins, then it conked out whilst i fiddled with the pilot screw. so i put it back to where it was and ............ nothing

plug out....... no spark. shite!! :banghead:

bike is back in many bits again trying to locate the fault. primary and secondary on coil within spec. pickup and winding's within spec. tried many other plugs. not even a glimmer of a spark. connections have been checked etc :(

Now when i was riding the bike before i rebuilt it there was an issue one morning on the commute. it stalled and failed to start but eventually did. after limping it to a shop i found the plug top had come loose and burnt the top of the spark plug really bad. so fitted new cap lead and plug. slight misfiring was still there but it got me about for a few more weeks. now if got a feeling the ecu was breaking down. has anyone ever had one slowly go like this???? Did the high resistance from the faulty cap ruin my ecu?? Its a MHR unit too. Im so bloody fecked off with this bike, i really really dont love it anymore

are the plug's your trying box fresh new? if not try that first. old plugs should go in the bin, even if they are "working"

check the coil trigger wire (purple) as this gives the coil the spark signal. if this is all in good condition then it must be the cdi or stator.

it does just sound like youve burnt the plug tho pal. unplug the stator ac wiring (2 yellows and one green) check for a spark. if it has one then the ignition switch is fucked. if you still get no spark (and all your earths are correct) then it can ONLY be the cdi or stator as the rest of the wiring would be isolated.. your literally running the cdi coil and the frame as the neg.

thanks for the help mate. All the plugs were fresh and tested. I had already tested the wiring as far as i could using the data in the book and online and everything appeared well within tolerances meaning the only probable cause would be the CDI. so booked the bike in for the dyno and got the shop to preorder a new CDI. When i took them the bike they said the CDI made no difference and their tests also showed that theoretically it should spark but it wouldn't. They tried other coils, flywheels plugs and still nothing so they swapped the stator for a new unit and hey presto! Just to prove it wasnt pot luck they put the old one back on and, nope wouldn't fire. They also tried my stator on other bikes and they too wouldn't fire. Like me they found that readings were all within spec and in his 15 years scootering he has never had a stator thats such a mystery.
Im going to get this stator back and have a closer look and work out why its screwed. Its got me and it had them. Using my electric and electronic knowledge, science will have and answer......

either that or my big effin scientific hammer will work it out!

christ can this bike get any more expensive! coming soon in forsale thread will be discounted spanking new Malossi MHR CDI
