Sand it down until alll the rust has gone. Then give it a sand with a very fine sand paper to smoothen it.

An to get it shiny like that you use satin black vht, mine came out like that. You have to leave it to dry abit then warm the bike an shit. Im fuckedd i cbatyp

how rusty is your pipe does it need treating with rust treatment first to turn the metal solid again before its painted?
once it has been painted in vht you also need to use vht clear laqcuer on top of that you cant just use normal clear paint as it will just burn of.
you want atleast 3 layers of the black vht and then the pipe has to be warmed slowly to harden the paint best way is to fit the pipe back on start the bike let it tick over for 10 mins but dont rev it as you dont want any sudden heat increase. then i find going for a steady 20 min ride at no more than half throttle does the job.
I you just fit it on and start it rev it and ride it the paint heats to quick and the heat destroys the paint and you will end up with a rusty pipe after a week. it needs to be steady and constant all the directions for each brand of paint will have it on the can how to harden it of right.

when i paint my pipes i simply sand down the rusy bit and the rest of the pipe to rough it up, then paint vht paint over it.

i usually leave a halogen lamp facing the pipe to dry it quicker between coats. 4-5 coats later (or a whole can to me) and i leave it overnight, then fit it let bike warm up and im done lol. no laqyer used, no extra careful heat cycle, just paint dry fit and run.

yeah but i want it to be a shiny black so i probably have to use lacquer. When im spraying it do i hang it up on a washing line ? And is it alright to take the end can of myy pipe ?

yeh take the can off and if you can hang the pipe up best time to do it is on a hot day aswell and upto you if you take my advice on gradually heating the pipe but i your paint wont last if you just fit it and let the pipe get hot fast

Star the bike to idle it for abit to warm it abit. If you just ride it, remember how hot the exhaust gets, itll just ruin the paint. I did my standar exhaust with some satin black vht from wilkos an spryed it after college left it to dry over night next morning let it idle for abit longe an slowly rode to college through the traffic an its still shiny now. Id get. Pic but i snPpe it an threw it in nans extention haha

I've just painted my exhaust again. This time I used BBQ paint from B&Q. It was cheaper than proper stuff, but has the same temperature resistance and looks better imo. It gives a darker more shiny finish. The paint seems harder too, but took a lot of drying.

halfords paint is matt grey, even if it states black. and the metallic black vht is just spekled grey. not gloss black like your wanting even if you lacquer it

If you're interested, this is what mine looks like with the B&Q paint on. It is true that Halfords and a lot of other VHT stuff gives a dark gray finish even when they say they're black. The pic of mine doesn't show how dark it looks in real life for some reason, I would recommend it.

Spirex and PJ1 used to be tha main paint suppliers for VHT stuff. Local bike shops usually stock one of them
