My 70 kit seized and I thought.....well thats the end of that.

But my brother bought me a hone kit and told me to try it......
So I thought I would try it

    Here are the results,

    Hone kit - £20

Runs sweeter than ever now. Just got to run it in again.

So when your kit seizes, use a hone kit! woot

    How exactly does it work?
Because I still have my brothers Polini 70 kit which siezed.
Ill get some new rings for tha piston and sell it :)

it takes a small ammount of metal off with grind stones. the only problem is it makes the barrel a larger diameter therefore the piston will be sloppy and the ring gap will be too large.

Only took about half an hour of solid honing.

Got some proper grinding oil which meant I could use it at higher rpm which made the job faster.

I'm just wondering but did you use a drill?
And how did you manage to make it all half a mil bigger and not have one part bigger then the other?

no because oversizes come in .25mm intervals, the hone won't take that much out, rings usually have a slightly tight end gap anyway so honing will counter the tight gap.

right, if you hone a barrel for more than 5 mins an theres marks you need to REBORE IT... an hour an a half with a hone just makes an off centre barrel.

There are hones and hones. That one is a piece of shit. (no offense intended)

If you micrometered up your cylinder, you would shit your pants.

You can oversize with a hone but it needs to be a rigid type and you have to know what you are doing. I have a sunnen AN hone that costs $1200 aussie dollars and wouldn't touch a 2 stroke cylinder with anything less. My sunnen would be 30 years old and has done 1000's of jobs and is still going strong. Because of the fact that 2strokes have ports and cut skirts, those wobble hones will follow the path of least resistance and your bore will end up egg shaped. Not good for power or longevity.

Don't even get me started on ball hones!!! :D

A sunnen AN junior would be ideal for scooter cylinders. you can get diamond stones for nikasil as well.

Google sunnen AN junior and you will see what I mean. Lisle make a nice portable hone as well and are considerably cheaper.

ebay is the best way to buy good hones. They often come up on deceased estates etc. and the sunnen AN series haven't changed significantly since WW2 so stones and parts are readily available. Expect to pay around $200USd but you will have a decent bit of gear for life.

I know that Im sounding like some kind of hone pervert but when you have an aluminium piston hitting velocities around 3000 feet per second in a cylinder with approx 0.05mm clearance, a bit of precision is called for.
