It could be tight rings ? Does it sound like it wants to kick over ? My bike generally take 4-6 kicks to get it going.

i dont understand, so its only just starting it? so it takes 3 kicks to start (which starting is ur problem) but it starts anyway?
whats ur problem then, just because it takes 3 kicks to start it?

My midrace 70 always started on the button, well, till I removed the starter motor that is

First port of call, check the batt voltage. Might be a dodgy reg/rec or battery.

And how did you do that then ? Because every person I know with a sport/mid-race/evo can't use a electric start ?

70s kit have more compression than a 50s and so ive been told most starters wont work on a 70s kit because of this. i don't no if this is fully true because i don't have a starter on my bike because of the smooth drive face and for weight loss. So my advice is to just stick to the kick start that way you can't go wrong. Hope this helped :)
