Im off to put an order in for a brand new ped tomorow. I was looking to buy from a shop (used ped) but with clothing, insurance all added it was going to cost around £1700 all together, after looking at brand new prices for some peds it adds upto around £2200 total. So for £500 i get a piece of mind and a brand new ped ;)

I was looking into the Aprilia SR50 R 2007 for £1645. What do you guys think of this scooter? does it have a good engine capable of around 50mph when derestricted when i turn 17?

How much would it be worth within two years if kept in MINT condition?

why are you looking to get a new bike, why not buy privately, you can get a really good low millage bike for about £800

Well, main reason is I cannot be arsed to go around viewing/negotiating prices and I really wouldnt know what to look out for since neither me or my dad are into mopeds and im thinking of making an entrance to the scene! Hope to do some serious mods to it when i turn 17 ;)

To be blunt... Don't buy a used scooter from a rip off dealer or a new scooter at all.

Scooters lose an amazing amount of value in a very short time.

The only reason to buy new is for the warranty, lack of needing an mot for 3 years (not always a good thing) and insurance deals. With all this factored in it's still cheaper to go for a second hand scooter.

Warrantys cover major problems not stuff like tyres and other service items and with most good makes you shouldn't ever need one. You also have to shell out for regular services at dealers to keep your warranty valid and you have to keep the scooter completely standard and restricted. They cost far to much.

As scooter parts are cheap even if things do go wrong then the price you pay for the warrenty is just not worth it. Scooters are also very simple so you can do all your own services with a little amount of knowledge or put them into a smaller scooter shop to have the work done saving on labour costs and if you source your own parts on parts too.

Piaggio do offer a £99 insurance deal with some of their new bikes but it's 3rd party only and has a very large excess. You would be better off going for another company and depending on the location and bike you could be paying £200-300 for tpft.

You can buy low milage, in good condition and that are only a couple of year old bikes for £500-800 depending on the model and how picky you are with cosmetics and the like.

I personally would say go the Piaggio route. Good reliability, very easy to get parts for, pretty much everywhere works on them, second hand bikes normally stick at one price once they get to it, great for tuning and customising and there are lots of people that know alot about them if you ever get stuck!

Both will completely void any warranty. Trust me after riding a standard 50cc you will want to tune it.

I tuned the hell out of my brand new Typhoon 50cc only 60km after i bought it.

I dont want to sound really subborn here but... I was offered by the official dealer to get it derezzed after im 17. Doesnt derestricting it only allow it to go back to its original specs?

    Originals Spec = Restricted

And yes its legal to get your bike de-restricted after you are 17 I think as long as you inform your insurance company and there are a few other rules you have to abide by. (If you want to stay 'legal')

Some dealers do offer a de-restriction service but it's very risky. They can turn around and say your warranty is void if they want to as it's them who would be doing the work.

It's legal to ride a de-restricted bike at 17 when it comes to your licence but finding a road legal de-restricted bike is one hell of a task. They have to be tested and reclassed as a scooter not a moped. A number plate light has to be fitted, a different headlight in some cases and the switches too, etc etc.

So you would be braking the law as much as your bike being a race tuned 70cc.

When I tunr 17, lets say i bought a 80cc kit, lighter rollers, sports pipe etc. (as most of the users on here do anyway) how likely am i to get pulled over and get into sh*t?

Your just as likely to get pulled as anyone else on any moped.

mopeds = prime target for police

75% of the time they can get someone done on a moped for something

so how about if i kept it at 50cc but made other mods such as pipe, new gearing, clutch, etc. will these keep it road legal?

It wouldn't go any faster as it would have to be restricted. If anything it would be slower.

Well, I would probably keep it restricted at 16, then derestrict it and put on a sport exhaust at 17. Insurance will cover the bike right? Will it pass MOT? and is tax still the same £15?
