there is but some people will frown upon this method, i did it and had no problems but dont blame me if anything goes wrong, take your spark plug out then you can insert something down that shaft to stop the piston moving thus being able to take the nut off coz the crankshaft wont be turning, i used a large hex key, dont use wood or anything that will leave crap in the engine, like i said though if you do it its at your own risk, you would be best off with a variator locking tool but this method works

borrow or even buy a variator lock between a couple of mates...it'll pay for itself over and over again and save wreckin the engine trying to make do

its a different bike, but all i did is take the the cover of the cooling fan, take the fan off, then there was 3 holes,so i took the bottom bracket of my leovince tt exhaust ,so i got another 13mm bolt and stuck it in to the bracket and turned the crank till the bolt slid in, went around the other side and nut came of fairly easy. gotta watch tho because sometime the 13mm bolt would drop out because there was no threds.

well i guess if your good with a saw and a drill you could try make somthing simular to the bracket haha. only other way is what other people have said mate. can you not buy one of them 12v lighter socket socket guns, there only about £25/30 last time i looked? atleast with one of them if your ever stuck with trying to take anything off that requires a bit more power your sorted. :)

well if your stuck for a bit of scrap metal sheet, try a local garage and ask if theyve got a tiny bit of scrap metal plate. there is one other way,but i wouldnt recomend it, if you get a pair of needle nose vice grips and clamp them to the first plate on the variator and hold them and try get the nut off at the same time, but there is a high chance it will damage the first plate or even snap it. would only try it that way tbh if you really have to and if only try it with a impact wrench.
