Just to know for my own understanding. I have had services for last few years but how much does the standard service entail? This will be leading into issues with my Gilera st 200 which I am trying to figure out. I assume full services cover important areas which any mechanic is required to do? I'm sure there are cowboys out there too. Any info would be great, thanks!
I'd say around this. depending on the milage and if thee work needs to be carried out Oil - Replace (4 stroke only) Oil Filter Replace (4 stroke only) Spark Plug Replace Brake Pads Check/Replace Brake Fluid Check/Replace Air Filter Check/Clean Suspension Check Gear Oil Check/Replace Throttle Freeplay Check/Adjust Carb Mixture Check/Adjust Idle Speed Check/Adjust Electrics Check Battery Check Tyre Pressure Check/Adjust Tyre Condition Check/Replace Transmission: Rollers Check/Replace, V-Belt Check/Replace Oil Pump Check/Adjust (2 Stroke Only)
You may wanna check the parametres of what's stated in your full-service contract, Cause if anything goes wrong, will give you a good indication for who's liable for the repair yourself or anyone that may not have carried out what's been paid for previously, help you to protect y/self against cowboys for instance.mk. .
Get Receipts for everything!, Early days ownership esp. is a prime target for cowboys /and-or/ always good to cover your bt. as well!. .
Watch the lone ranger special - parts o.k. but replace anyway as say it was defective.... make it a deffo that no work to be carried out unless permission given by you (this will guard against a part being 'chucked'-so's you can't verify), as this could get expensive an be used as a cash cow. .
Crap, I made a stupid typo. 10,000 miles not 1000 miles. I bought it from the Uk and imported to Ireland and it has had non stop problems from a huge range of rusted parts due to salting of UK roads, exhaust mount bracket snapping and bearings going left right and centre. Engine vibration and rattles. Everything is sorted except last 2 issues of rattling. As soon as bike arrived it wouldnt start as carb was filthy so think the guys I got it from (Motor dealership) did a half assed job and sent it over. This was my main enquiry on how much a full service would cover. E.g Clean carb, check and clean working parts, oil change etc. Just to ensure everything is looking good mechanically. As it is my second Gilera (previous st 125), problems seem to be the norm.
Feel ya!, Similar probs.with my ped, Sposed to be uber reliable/but probally been static too long - tryed pressing poor wee beast into service too early. ., So's not so much rebuild but renovation!, You can always get thee in the end....... If there's a will there's a way!. .
When the st 200 runs perfect it is a brilliant machine. I keep sending it in to fix it but religiously after sending it in to fix (say a mount bearing) 3 days later exhaust bolt snaps. Repair, 3 days later a rattle appears. After repair, 3 days later scooter feels like it is snaking around corners. Replaced over 8 components and went through exhaust snapping off. I am at the point where I want a mechanic to go through it from top to bottom and tell me everything is perfect, bolted up and in top shape. I know money comes from trees but it doesn't grow on it! Italian piece of shit... but love it
That's just it though! 'Character' - you can have something that gives you no end of trouble, But when it works proper / Solid Gold!!. .
servicing is as follows, change the engine oil, check the valve clearence, gear oil, plug, check all bulbs and such, check steering bearings and wheel bearings, check brakes, lube all moving parts etc, check rollers and belt. thats it
