Not used to enclosed top-ends!,i can understand in principle why a 'ped has metal cowling/mat (vibration, noise, heat transfer and fan cooled). Am thinking of taking the best cyl/head of a small selection of motors i've scored - getting it rebored/blasted nice/new an shiny and running without cowling/mat,kinda single track mind thinking 'bout other issues and have bad feeling i'm missing? something in regards.
your going to need to reword this so ppl under stand you. from what i can tell is your going to get a kit re-bored, then run it without cooling? first is the kit an ali kit, because a re-bore and re-nickel plating will be about £150+(starting price) if the bike is air cooled just get a new kit. the high end kits on a/c are not worth the money. running it without the cooling i would think will kill the kit in under 5miles?
Sorry for the wording. :-( . No kit as bike has considerable rebores on std. top end., Did'nt understand till just now relation of fan/cowling+. Thanks.
Your better off leaving the cowling in place. Air cooled engines rely on a steady flow of air around the barrel and head to keep the engine cool, when you are riding theres plenty of air flowing over it but when you are riding slow or stopped in traffic it has now flow at all especially when it's tucked away under the bike. The cowling is there to direct the flow of air from the fan to do the job. The main issue with air cooled bikes is that they are designed to work within a wide heat band and are built with larger tolerances to allow for expansion. This tends to make them less efficient and less tunable than liquid cooled engines which have more control over the operating temperature.
Love the post! ., at the time, did'nt understand how scooter engine cooling worked in relatio to air/cooled geared motors that i'm familiar with. completely did'nt cross my mind on cooling/just thought was an anti-vibe measure 'an t-end looking smart when blasted alongside case/polished.cheers.mark. .
cowling is for traffic... ac work better with no cowlong at speed but heat up quick due to the position of the cylinder... so they stick a cowling and fan on... these bikes are designed for traffic not long straight roads
