depends on what paint you're using

If its a rattle can, then you'll need to primer, flat it back and then top coat

If you want something a bit tougher, use Hammerite smooth from an aerosol (dont laugh!)

heres the frame I did in hammerite smooth for the RG rebuild

Hammerite covers well and is durable (and overspray gets everywhere as you can see in the old gagare picture). If you want a good shiny finish, let it harden and then clear coat it....putting a dry coat of first

when it comes to frames unless im after something specific i normally get them powder coated the main reason is because its strong and last's for years it also stops rust dead and its not really that expensive.
i got my kx500 frame done in kwak green i took the frame as it was all dirty and manky the guy blasted it then painted then baked it in the oven and it was like new and only cost me £40 for the lot it only took an hour aswell

Lots/thanks for tip!,quite sound advice from the stig-but would more likely go that route if felt more competant.
Really digging quite about stopping rust dead, that! was my one major concern/the bits i could'nt see!!.

99.9% of places that powder coat will media/sand blast the frame and get right into all the small places that your really cant get into by doing it by hand and the end result always looks like a factory finish

That's the route for me then, allied to near 28 year old metalwork, might do a tacit recce to see prices for
    job lot-maybe 2 loads 2 colours.

Totally agree with powder coating being a more robust option. Only prob around here is the price. It cost me £40 for the rear subframe alone on the EXUP and it was ALREADY blasted ready for coating. For a frame you'd be looking at £100 and when the whole bike only cost me £200 it was a bit over budjet to powdercoat

BTW, where did you get the frame done so cheap?

    no sorry, my bad.

the rear subframe for the EXUP was £40. I was quoted £65 by the other company in the area that I know of

Any frame...like the RG one in the pic would be £100...the whole bike cost me £200

wheels around here (Mansfield Notts) are £40 each

you can buy cheap kits and the paint powder on ebay all you need is a cheap second hand oven and a heat gun. and do bits yourself save you a lot of money.
il send you my tranni cover to do so thats 1 customer already
