on one of the frames i have in the garden (piaggio nrg) the Frame numbers are not visible anymore (due to remove rust from it). i went in a bike shop and they told me they could write them again for £110 if i show them the logbook and the drive licence. is there any cheaper way? any suggestions?
Then its down to you really if you need the frame in a rush for a build or something maybe shop around abit more and if you cant find someone cheaper then thats your only option. OR if your not in a rush wait for one to come about? just keep an eye out on ebay gumtree whatever
No it hasnt got to be done by a shop you can do it yourself just make sure you use the rite tools and do it properly.
i dont see how a bike shop could do this its basically ringing. for instance you have a dodge frame let the plate rust then take it there with a legit logbook and get them to stamp them numbers on there. out of interest what shop did you take it to twa?
the bike shop is DMC London Ltd in Islington.. was sounding strange to me but then i think is common as it can happen.. even for bikes when you buy a new frame they delivery it without frame numbers (i've read this)..
I dont think a shop can legally do it.. Because people could just pinch bikes, grind the numbers then have it re-stamped to another logbook. I personally wouldnt bother, unless the bike/frame had been reported stolen theres no reason why the police would ever need to look at it.
I may be wrong, shops might be allowed to do it but I really doubt it. Yea I think you need a frame number to pass an MOT (or it might just be engine number, to stop punks banging engines into other bikes). Its down to the owner of the bike to look after the frame and not allow it to rust so badly. Lucky enough for me my skipper has its frame number on a sticker inside the glove box
you can re-stamp numbers. If the police are suspicious they can send the bike to a lab, which has technology to determine the orginal numbers, because the original stamping disturbs metal far deeper than visually seen.
garages are allowed to stamp numbers with authorisation from the insurance company and police + a fail certificate or letter from MOT inspector stating the issue/reason for. Had to do this for a customer a while back.
well, at the end i bought a frame with numbers, i'm going to change them on the V5.. it came with a lots of spares too so not bad
