can anyone help? The last two days my computer keeps deciding to turn itself off for no apparent reason?? I've run anti virus programs etc to no avail and found nothing....so any ideas as to why it keeps doing this? Any help much appreciated Ta Di
alright mate, the reason is , A) you psu doesnt have enough power.. or B) you dont have enough ram . The thing you should do to see how bad it is. Is, go to run. Then type in the comman msconfig. Then click the startup tab, and un-click all the programs you do not use.. possibly all of them !. This will stop loads of things starting when you turn your pc on and will save alot of memory. If this doesnt work try deleting any programs you dont use!. And sadly if that doesnt work , go down to the pc store and buy yourself a 500w psu! (power supply unit)!
well, that is a cure if you wanna keep the spyware. its overloading as theres a million things running at once run spybot s&d, uninstall anything from control pannel you dont recognice then go to start, run and type msconfig. go to startup and just look whats starting with windows. uncheck a few. sounds like a worm to me tho so might need to save everythoing and reinstall windows on a freshly formatted hdd easy wqay is to run a live cd (opperating system that runs from a cd so no installing/bugs) and burn all your files to cd. this is pritty extreme tho so run through the first few steps and see how it runs
assuming all the fans are working then you problem, as minor said is a spyware issue, run search and destroy and also download a program called Smitfraud Fix (google it and it comes up)
i was gonna say it could be a mechanical prob, but spyware is the most obvious, if not just clean the fan out, as lots of dust accumulates in there and things get a bit hotter its good practice to do it anyway, helps to rule out overheating if a problem arises
Ive got spybot S&D and everytime i run it I get that "smitfraud" come up in it...it doesnt clean it out though even though it says it has fixed it.....so google it is I'm gonna do a major cleanup of programs i dont use and put them on disc aswell..save abit of memory... as for reformatting...how do i go about doing that on this computer as it came with window XP pre installed? cheers for the help fellas unk:
no problem, i had the smitfraud thing, install first then run computer in safe mode and run the program, instructions are on the website i think.
shouldent need a reformat, but if so you need a copy of windows xp on disk (not illegal for me to copy for you as you have a code probably stuck on your computer somwhere) then save every file, link and password/cookie on your computer you want to keep. and put the windows cd in, then restart the computer (make sure the setup utility (bios) is set to boot from cd) and follow the on screen prompts at this point i usually bin the windows cd and install an os that doesent have viruses or crash but thats just me
Hmmm I think it was just a case of overheating the past couple of days, Ive run every diagnostic known to man and beast imp: and its turned up nothing abnormal, just run a smitfraudfix program and it found nothing...last time it turned itself off was early this morning, but after pulling the tower away from the wall it hasnt done it since..just gave it a clean aswell...so fingers crossed I've got a windows XP disc from my last computer...just wondered if it was a different process reformatting when it comes pre-installed :emb:
:w00t: Posted that^^^ and guess what!...computer turned itself off again  Think at the weekend I'm going to reformat the computer and if that doesnt solve it, its going back to the shop where i bought it and they can shove it up there arse!!!....or repair it as its under warrenty still
Yeh, if it just randomly restarts no warnings etc.. properly cpu overheating.. soo take side case off take fan off - clean it - canned air.. take heatsink off - clean it - canned air. remove any thermal compound (looks like glue) then goto a pc shop ask for thermal compound place a thin layer then should all be fine.. if not just drop it in to me..
Try Adaware also very good. You should use lots of different spyware programs as they all pick up different things Don't forget to keep everything updated.
Ive got adaware by lavasoft and Ad watch by them also, other programs I have: Spybot S&D AVG anti-spyware Rogueremover McAffe personnal firewall AVG Free edition Smitfraudfix Had norton but got rid of it as it kept fooking the computer up....think the computer needs a clean out anyways as the kids tend to download a load of crap all the time
my server (what im on most of the time) has only spybot and windows firewall. no updates and is formatted atleast every 6 months (mabey less) havent had a virus or worm in about 3 years altho spybot does find things if i dont run it for a lil while. protection is one thing, backing up your files and a clean format is like a new computer every time. should have EVERY file you would miss burnt/stored on a backup hard drive anyway as you never know when your computer might not turn on. ill say it again as i love repeating myself. linux is free, has NO viruses or worms, has no registry so theres no spyware risk, verry good security out of the box and is alot better atr doing anything you ask windows to. never have to restart your computer (unless your fitting hardware) the list goes on. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJ8IIyikhkc&NR=1
My linux box had 215 days of uptime but it crashed so i took that time to update the kernal. ;o At the moment im on XP no firewall no antivirus... (the only time i got a virus is when someone sent me a trojan via msn) its how use your computer... what you do with it.
I would consider using linux, what distro do you use? I've tried suse in the past. I need to be able to convert divx to dvd accurately and easily and couldnt find anything simle back then. Also i dont know if anyone has written anything yet for linux that'll allow you to connect to the xbox 360 for streaming music / video?
not sure about the xbox, but i know theres ripping/convertion software out there completly free.. i use sabayon linux mini x86 (with beryl) LOADS in the mini edition and the 4.7gb dvd install has more software than you can shake a stick at. ive used ubuntu, mandrake, knoppix, redhat, suse, allsorts but found this easy to get along with aswell as having some amazing visual effects (as in the video) download the mini, partition out 10gb (or install a slave 10gb drive) and install it. can run alongside xp no problem. just be careful when installing as its easy to kill the main partition (windows)
tangosr, im sure its your computer over heating, as i had the same problem with my old computer. just open up the case and clean out the fans from dust and crap. should be smooth after that.
he's trying to say your house is dirty di.. dont have it :w00t: but ye, id say that aswell if i didnt know about the 3 teenageers who often use the computer for msn/bebo/piczo and the like.
pfft minor, :bird: my monies on the overheating, just take the case off clean fans from dust, its very straightforward.
