extra head gasket or base gasket.

I see some people post here and elsewhere about squish, compression and gaskets. the advice is always to adjust the base gasket which would affect the clearance of the barrel from the engine block. Where I think it would make no difference on a 4 stroke, wouldn't it be better to adjust the clearance between the head and barrel on a 2 stroke as port timings could be affected.
