Bit of a noob when it comes to computer stuff but bare with me.

I'm after a external harddrive for my laptop. Am I right in thinking it is plug and play and preety simple to backup my files onto it?

I have a 80gb harddrive on the laptop so I won't need nothing too big would I?

What sort of size would you recommend, baring in mind future use and maybe adding more onto the harddrive as I go along.

Just plug in and play yeah pal, i was after one a bit ago that plugged into the ethernet port on your pc which makes it mega fast to transfer data.

The USB ones arn't slow and i've only ever seen like 2 LAN ones.

Just had a quick look ont net cant see any now they must not have been popular lol, you can get a 250gb one for about £50

    Yeah basically lol

Aint gonna expire dont run on batterys or out, isn't flash memory of course so dont keep it in a cement mixer just in case.

Personally id have mine plugged in most of the time and keep my stuff on it and then i could like access my work at school if needed or out or music all that.

You can get some with TV output which is kinda cool

Do you actually want to carry it about or just use it for backups?

If it's for more space/carrying it about then you want a USB powered external. More expensive for the price as they are much much smaller.

If it's just for backup then it doesn't matter about size so you could get a larger one that has to be plugged into a power socket as they are cheaper per gb.

Na don't want to carry it about. I just want to back up my stuff to it and not have to worry about it. Like I would like one that doesn't have to be charged or plugged in? Or are they like that? I.e. Would be good to have one that acts as a USB stick if you know what I mean.

    Should I just get a 160gb or 500gb?

Will I need software for it or will it come with it, gileratyph mentioned something?

Small ones are USB powered. Big ones are mains powered. I'm talking physical size here not storage.

For £50 you can get a 250gb USB powered hard drive.

Just to show you an example for the same money for a larger mains powered drive you get twice the storage.

They are plug and play. No drivers no nothing. They come formatted too. You only may need software if you want to make backing up bits easy so it auto does them or whatever.

Sweet cheers mate. Wouldn't need more than 250gb anyway I don't think, might get the usb one as it sounds easier to use.
