What are everyones thoughts on ethonol blended petrol?

We have 95 octane ethanol blend (10%) here in aus....its usually cheaper than normal unleaded.....

has anyone had any problems using such fuel?

we don't really get it here in the UK, although all i can suggest is if it's cheaper, try it, whats the worst that can happen?

is ethanol the same as pure alcohol???

when i used to be into goped tuning (small cc 2strokes) people on an american forum used to run pure alcohol as it was sold in petrol stations but they needed a special carb to do it.

your best off finding a forum in the states and asking there as like wobbly says, stuff like this doesnt exist over here :nerd:

it runs diff so you need to completly ajust the carb. but once done it runs colder and with more power. more so called bad emmisions but its not like its fuckin diesel or anything. will be fun if setup right ;)

the gas emmissions are supposed to be better....

im no chemist, but apparently ethanol converts to water and CO2....which is better than the CO3 from petrol....

anyway... i ran some in the ET2 and it makes stuff all difference...
after all its still 90% normal unleaded.

its not recommended for performance car engines, but thats because of the lack of lubrication for the top end in ethanol (being an alcohol/solvent) but i figure we are using 2T oil anyway so it should be ok.....

I was strongly advised against using it.

Ok, using it in a scoot may be a bit different from all sorts of mowers......which is where the advice was coming from: a local shop which services 4 & 2T chainsaws, mowers, blowers, & big ride-ons etc etc.

I'm opting to keep away from it.

Gday Rob.... Good to see another aussie on here....
    What do you ride?

What happened to the mowers etc using ethanol blends?

    Hi Hi Simon,

The mower guy said that it "craps them up".....without specifics.
They get all sorts of stuff to service, & he spoke of a customer running a small fleet of mowers, saying that they'd gotten very poorly with ethanol blend....cost the customer a bucket load to fix.

I don't see the worth is stooging for a few cents saving with the stuff. If there were a performance gain then we'd have all heard of it by now.

One thing I have experienced with fuel is to buy it from a reputable outlet, say, BP, & use the recommended octane for your bike.
Why I say this because I used an octane that was too high from a servo that isn't a mainstream outlet.
I've always noticed that none of the racers going to Ipswich Raceway / Kart Track at Willowbank never stop there to fill up.
I used the high octane on all 3 bikes & by the end of racing they were getting slow. After stripping them they were all gunked & dry as though there was no 2T lube, but I know for sure they got their lube as I religiously do premix......I'm forgetful so I write on the bottle the date of mixing & write a line to show how much was used.
They were so close to completely seizing......badly coked up...it was amazing.

Apparentley some high octane stuff from "Noname" servos can have weird additives. I wouldn't have thought the high octane by itself would have caused me probs, & so I reckon it was the additives.

Whatever the case, since then I've resolved to keep with 95 octane as recommended by Malossi, unless I get pinging probs.

    What are you riding, Simon?
I don't have any road going bikes as they've all been de-registered for the track. Two ported 70cc Bug Bandits & one ported 50cc Vmoto Monza.
Got a road bike on order for the last 6 months, & should be coming next month.....Derbi Racing GP1 . Looking forward to that.

Come over to Ipswich Kart Track sometime for a Track Night......just riding around the 1K track....real good fun.
There should be more Track Nights happening nearer to Brissy soon so keep a lookout.

    The Derbi....coming soooooooooon

    Thanks Rob.

I would never use it 100% of the time anyway. i do just over 1 tank of riding per week, so at most ill be squirting a few $$ in on the weekends from my local servo to get me through.

for everything else its usually caltex or mobil 95 octane.

Those bikes look sweet.... what are their specs?

Im on the south side of brissy (pretty close to archerfield,....so hopefully the brisbane track days you talk about are going to be there).

Willobank is a bit far to commute on the scooter, and my other car is a mazda RX8, so im not hooking a trailer up to it hehe.

I ride a 04 vespa et2 with the below specs...
im waiting to fit a new contra spring, oil pump belt, ht lead, and i have a giannelli reverse pipe on order.

    where is blackall range?

Blackall Range is Maleny area, up in the hills of the Sunny Coast.

There are/were scooter track days at Archerfield Track. Don't know what's happening with that these days though it's a small track.

If you wanted to come along to Willowbank with your bike then it's possible someone could give you & your bike a lift.

In the near future it sounds linke there will be more Track Days or Nights on offer in SE QLD.

    I'll try remembering the specs:
    Lowered front & rear.
    Ported Malossi 70cc air cooled.
    OEM 17.5mm carbi
    pod filter with 125 jet
holes in body to feed the pod filter :D
    carbon reeds
PMTuning adjustable clutch still being tuned...need a new bell
    Malossi variator
    Giannelli CR exhaust
    Lowered seat
    vented tranny cover
Dayco belt...non racing & works great...slightly longer than oem.
ripped out autolube in favour of doing 3% fully syn premix.
Malossi pads: awsome......the more heat ya throw at them the more they bite.
    Malossi shoes....bit sqeeky.
    Malossi Upgear
    4g weights
Wheel arch removed to feed the engine more fresh air
Tyres on purple bike are Pirelli SL26
Others bikes are Sava MC 29

    Things I'm working on
    To lower the bars
Trying to find a decent shocky....budget / stoooge constraints.

    Future:
would like to have a crack at modifying the exhaust as there's prolly an in-built muffler to help it comply with Euro standards. I rather think the exhaust needs a better profile. I bought those Gianellis just for the bling factor :D
    Bigger carbi
The previous 2 should really boost performance & let the bike rev more.

    they sound awesome :)

what speeds do you get out of them?

how do you find scooter style....?
i went there once, and they seemed to be quite helpful.

There are not enough scooter shops around this area that sell aftermarket bits.... like Polini 9 roller variators for example :confused:arc:

I've not tried them for flatout speed...not really game enough, preferring to preserve them for the track. Over a distance of 150 metres which is one of the straights of Willowbank Kart Track they get to 75kph on the speedo, & the Monza gets 65Kph.
They should top a 100 easy & the Monza over 80Kph.

Scooterstyle was my 1st encounter with an enthusiastic performance scooter shop after a few years of frustrating (does not compute) brick wall stares when approaching other stores. I'd been reading up the Provo Forums for yonks planning my bling performance mods only to find no-one in AU seemed to be interested.
It's a bit of a shame I moved away from Noosa before they started up there.
Anyways, I'm a self-confessed fanboi of Scooterstyle & carry their advertising on my scoots though not formally sponsored by them. Scott is very helpful (when he's not tooo rushed off his feet) with my demands for parts.

Scooter Scooters & ScooterHQ should be helpful for performance goodies & know-how.
    I take it you know about www.gpsimports.com.au , & a recent one I found is www.mojoscooterco.com.au .
There's a mob in Adelaide who sound like they know their stuff as I believe they run a drag bike etc....though I don't know of anyone's shopping experience with them www.showandgo.com.au

Yeah I like the concept of the 9-roller variator.
Ecosse in the UK seems to be the one for Polini stuff

    Cool thanks man.

ive used scooterHQ, they could get me some bearings, but no rings...
GPS are good... fairly quick turn around and a fairly large stock (limited polini stuff though)
Show and Go are ok.. but a bit pricey compared to others
ive also used road rocket.... who are ok too... although a bit hard to contact.

    ill check out mojo :)

    have you ordered from ecossescooter?

they seem pretty cheap, but i doubt they will deliver to aus for the price they listed....

Yes, though it was from their Ebay listing of variator rollers.
I like Polini rollers.....good quality & nicely presented in a decent box....good for keeping all my rollers organised, plus they include the 3 little triangle slide thingies.

I'd be guessing they will ship to AU. Maybe drop em a line to find out the rates.
