What is the best way to clean an engine? i have been told about getting it tanked but i dont know any places that do it in Yorkshire, and dont want to post engine cases.

I am wanting to paint my engine and need to have it very clean what the best stuff for the job.
i will use brake caliper brush on paint that will stick to anything but i would still like to give it the best chance if staying on the cases by cleaning the best i can

For me it's usually more about the scrubbing than chemicals and stuff. Wire wool and brushes and mops on a drill are definitely a good idea. Won't need any more than fairy liquid and hot water with the right ones. Even less if you've got power/air tools

Jizer brushed on and washed off will remove all traces of oil and grease. Wire wool or a Scotchbrite pad will roughen up the surface to provide a key for the new paint.

I'm totally OCD when it comes to paint jobs, so mine was alkaline degreased, paint stripped, acid etched to remove oxidation, acid etch primed with 2 coats of U-Pol No.8 then two coats of Simoniz Wheel Steel followed by a couple of coats of lacquer.

The result looks lush though, doesn't it?
