I'm back! :O been creeping round the forum for a lil bit lately.. seems to be ALOT of new kids who know jack shit, i can now see why the admins get peeved but anyway.. on topic

was out on my dt earlier on.. after about 50 miles riding or so it made a funny noise when i came to some traffic lights, i thought "SHIT" pulled over incase something was majorly wrong with it, flicked it up into neutral then it cut out..

so me thinking it was just too warm, left it to cool down for 10-20 mins or so, come to start it again and it's doing jack shit with the occasional back-fire (i think its backfiring anyway) big flame came out the exhaust at one point...

could there just be some shit built up in the carb on it and the flame that flew out was just fuel burning off?

Whats wrong with a tow rope?

My lads gets towed regularly and returns the favour for friends. This week his throttle cable snapped 10 miles from home. He had a cloth towel under his seat for drying it when the bikes been left outside.

He stripped the towel and made a rope. 30 mins later he was back home

I've towed him back with the thou too....fastest ped on here that night LOL :beg:

BTW, as for your DT, try the obvious first, check plug and cap for a good spark and start from there

how do you check the spark on the plugs?

Annnndddd how do you check the ignition coil's working?

^ words of my dad, he's sorting it..

    thankyouuu :D

take the plug out and refit it into the plug cap. Rest it against the barrel or head and then crank over the enjin. If theres a good strong spark, you're sorted, coil is OK and plug prob is too. Only thing then, the plug may be breaking down under load but in your case if its not starting at all, its not a factor.

If the electrics are OK refit the plug and cap, then try holding you hand over the end of the carb with the filter off, crank over the engin again and your hand should be wet with the atomized petrol :good:

    he says the sparks fine..

claims he has some "other things to try" when he gets home from work tonight..

would you suggest putting a bit of fuel where the plug's menna go then try starting it so it "fires any shit out thats blocked" or is that a stupid idea? (or something on those lines, i wasn't really listening)

if theres a strong spark, then the next thing is to confirm fuel getting to cylinder. Is the plug wet after you've cranked it over for a while?

If its wet then you have fuel and the only thing left to check is the air flow. Three major ingredients for combustion.

If you have all three, then make sure the mixture is set correct and check compression

how do you check the air flow, like how much should there be?

+ how do you check the compression

quite nooby questions i know but..

so I assume you've got fuel and a wet plug????

airflow, make sure the air filter is clean and the mixture screws are where they should be (see manual)

compression tester from Halfords are about £18 but if you've had the bike a while and started it often, you get a feel for how much pressure you have to put thro' the kickstart to turn it over. if its easier than norn, then theres a good chance theres a prob with rings/barrell

it's an electric start on this model.. theres a place for a kick to go with a cover over it but it seems they took it off the newer ones =\

+ yeah theres definately fuel getting through

barrel depends if its damaged (scored). and on what the type it is (nicosil plated?)

If its std iron barrel why not get it bored and go 0.5mm oversize...if its nicosil, you can get them replated for approx £110 or have an iron liner installed (what I've done with the RG125F) for £150
