right thought i would clear this up once and for all
when you do your cbt *complusury basic training* it allows you to ride
    a 49cc moped at 16 years old
anything up to 125cc at 17 years old
upon completion, but you must have L plates displayed on your vehicle at all times and your NOT allowed to carry passengers or ride on a motorway
anyways if you passed your driving test before the 1st of febuary 2001 that entitles you to a full moped license *category P* and theres no need take your cbt so you can jump straight onto a 49cc scooter without l plates and carry a pillion passenger
    BUT !!!!!
if you passed your driving test after the 1st febuary 2001 different steps are needed
if you have a valid cbt certificate and you have just passed your driving test
send your provisional away and it will come back with a full category P license
these two combined are a valid moped license
so you may ride your 49cc moped without L plates and carry a pillion passenger
    IF !!!!!
your cbt has ran out before your you pass your driving test simply redo your cbt and if the category P is not on your license
send both parts of your license, your cbt certificate and a covering letter explaining you have full category P to dvla swansea
and it will come back with a full category P
    PLEASE NOTE !!!!!
once you have your full category P license which consists of your car license and cbt certificate, the cbt is valid for the life of your car license for a 49cc scooter but after the expiry date you CANNOT ride anything above a 49cc scooter/bike you must redo your cbt to ride your 100, 125 etc as they are covered in your provisional motorcycle entitlement

you MUST still display L plates on anything above a 49cc scooter
i,e you cant take the L plates off your runner 125 and have your mates on the back as they count as small automatic motocycles not mopeds !!!

    REMEMBER!!!!!
A moped has a maximum design speed not exceeding 50 km/h (approx. 31 mph). It has an engine capacity no greater than 50 cc and can be moved by pedals, if first used before 1 August 1977.

so if you choose to derestrict/tune or modify your moped and it then exeeds 31 mph and is classed as a small motorcycle and therefore you cannot ride it on your full moped license

fuck me that was a mouth full :nerd:

only if the licence is pre 1996 (i belive) if you HAD a 125/250 entitlement once upon a time it STILL applys... the laws present at the time of TAKING YOUR RESPECTIVE TEST are correct for you, not modern law.. funny old world, but ye, if your old, had a full licence for bloody years chances are you can ride a 125 with no l plates or even a 250
