Do I need to worry about timing on 50cc rebuild?

So my gilera dna50 engine was stripped for a water impeller replacement , whilst split I fitted new bearings, crankshaft and piston top end. It's nearly back together but do I need to worry about timing issues on rebuild? The piston is fitted correctly and stator + flywheel only fits one way so does a 50cc single cylinder engine need timing checking with a strobe and if so how is it adjusted?

Lovely, thanks. Any idea what the clearance between top of piston and head should be so I can fit the right thickness of gasket? Ill do the 'squash the gum technique' at tdc as I haven't got an electronic reader.

No idea, depends on where you want the power band to be and other stuff, do a bit of a google and see what you dig up
