nope, the manufacturer put it in there for absolutely no reason, it has no use so they spent an extra couple of thou developing the design for it.

 

thank fuck for that mate, that little washer thing is the only reason the pulley is jamming. iv just took the washer off and put it all back together and now its running fine.

so hopefully this means i dont need a new crank. i mean my crank is only the slightest bit chewed but i wil have to see how it goes.

i would say yes as its made of steel.fan made of alloy so will strip splines without it.cheers

 

the "star washer" is crucial, without it you will strip out the outer pulley then rip the crank splines to shreads, trust me, i've had a star washer shear and all you can do is rebuild the engine.
