Hi, I have a 2004 vespa et2 with a laser pro street exhaust, and today I just changed the standard airfilter spounge for a red mallossi one.

I also cleaned the airfilter in the secondary airbox, and removed the blocked off tube that used to go into the standard exhaust, the rubber tube was blocked off with tape to stop air getting in. So I removed it to increase the airflow maybe..

Ok after the first test run, It was slightly slower on acceleration and about 2mph slower on topspeed (45mph at this point), but ran as smooth as normal.. Got it home and checked the plug, it was a white/gray colour which I think is lean. Last time I checked it was black and oily.

I then went a put back the blocked off rubber tube onto the secondary airbox.. Re tested it and acceleration was better, topspeed was about 2-3mph faster than before, not much more than standard though. Spark plug is still white.. But engine runs fine and a little better than before?

Do I need to change jet or adjust the carb settings? Sorry its a long post for a small problem, Any help would be great!

keep the redundant hose into the air box blocked off, as any extra air will need
an increase in jet size ;)

not sure i like the idea of using tape though....

A better way is to find a bolt that is a snug fit and push it into the hole, with a small jubilee clip or at the least a spot of super glue :D

The hole is stuffed with tape and completely sealed off, the problem is, the engine runs great but the spark plug is white/gray which indicates its running lean, and I dont want to damage my engine or even seize it.. Will it be ok to run it like this?

No it should be setup correctly or expect it to seize.

So just by adding the airfilter its running lean?

Is the bike jetted for the exhaust?
Time to start playing with your carb :w00t:

The exhaust is performance wise, the same as standard but stainless steel. Its even more quiet than standard. So the jetting hasent been changed.

The last time I checked the plug before fitting the airfilter, it was dark brown/black. The red spounge has made it turn a white/gray colour. But the engine seems to run fine. No flat spots or bogging at all.

But do you think this will damage my engine after a while?

Dont forget reading plug colours has to be done properly....

its all very well whipping the plug out and saying "yeahh thats brown so evrythings ok".

you need to know exactly which part of the carbs calibration circuit your looking at...

you can ride around all afternoon on part throttle and get a brown plug colour,
but that wont be telling you anything about the main jet ;)

I've now removed the mallossi spounge and fitted the standard one back on. Plug colour seems to be getting darker.. So all back to normal hopefully lol.. Air filters seem like too much hassle for what its worth.
