Hi, I am new to the forum and have just bought a Peugeot Speedfight 2 50cc AC 2005. It is from a friend and has not been run for at least 8 months. It has had a complete engine rebuild and then garaged for 4 years. He could not get it started so called the breakdown company out and was told it was the coil as there is no spark. I bought the scoot and bought a new coil and fitted it. I tried to start the bike and there was still no spark. I left it alone for about 30 mins and went back to it to try again. There was a blown fuse, so I replaced it and there was smoke coming from the CDI unti. It is the red wire that goes into the cdi and the pin was 'welded' into the plug on the wiring loom. There was no smoke before when I first put a fully charged battery on it. Does anyone have an idea why the cdi would suddenly start to smoke. Thanks in advance. Ian. This is the unit This is a pic of the pins
It might be expensive. I think I will just get a speedfight with a blown engine and fit this one in it. It wont be yet, but I will finally get around to doing it. lol. For now, I will mot my Bali and ride that around.
your bali shares the same engine as an SFX and a daelim message (amongst others) the speedfight motor is differnt to the honda one although it looks the same (the cylinders even have the same stud pattern)
Thanks. What other scoot will the speedfight engine fit. I think it will fit the vivacity, but unsure. I have seen parts of engines that are listed as fitting many scooters but a complete engine is never mentioned. The engine in my Bali is a good one and runs well and also starts up well. I might be taking the bali for an mot at the weekend or early next week if i| dont buy another scoot.
speedfight motors are the same as the vivacity, trekker and a few other ones that i cant think of, the bali i think is the same as the sfx, x8r, and a few more..... good motors as long as they have good oil in them
i wouldnt use anything other than castrol. ive not used any other brand, but castrol is a time served goodun for me. i guess any fully synth will be good, just dont use that cheap own brand mineral crap
Thanks. I will get Castrol. I have not used that since I got my first moped back in 1988. It was a honda melody. Yellow one but the exhaust kept cracking at the bend near the head. Until it fell off completely. lol.
Why would you put that engine into another bike? You have an electrical problem that needs looking into. Could be a simple fix, but you won't know until you start looking. Agreed no spark could be down to the coil or plug, but can also be down to the cdi or generator coils or flywheel. Or all of them. I would trace that red wire back to its source, see where it goes to first.
I will work on it when the weather warms up a bit. I have seen cdi units that only have one plug going into them, but mine has two plugs. The cdi unit with immobiliser bypass only has one plug. What is the other plug for. Small square plug with three pins. If there is a serious problem with the wiring and I cant trace it, it would be easier for me to get another scoot to put the engine in. My engine has had a lot of work done to it, new rollers, bearings, seals, jets, exhaust, rollers etc and has only done around 5 miles since its rebuild. I replaced the coil but still had no spark. Seems a shame to let it go to waste just sitting there. I have my Bali that I am preparing for mot. It is a good runner and starts easy, so I am concentrating on that.
I have just found out the small square plug is the immobiliser and is not needed on a bypass cdi unit. I will get one of these and will have to trace the red wire to see where the short is. It might turn out to be an easy fix. I hope so.
the break could be in the motor wiring (ei from the stator plate to the block connector) also, someone could have put an extractor tool too deep into the screw threads on the flywheel and crushed a stator winding (it sounds more complicated than it is!) im sure steve can point you in the right direction of what i mean with that
After all the work was done to the engine, it was running. The owner rode it up and down his street about four times. he tried to sell it but never got any interest in it. He only advertised it on swaps. The AA was called out to try to start it and they said it was suspect coil for no spark. I stripped the plastics off the back to replace the coil. I had to break the old coil off and undo the bolt with a pair of pliers. I didnt touch or cut through any wires though. But I am wondering if a wire could have got trapped when the plastics were put back on. But, the engine was turning over but still no spark after replacing the plastics. No smoke at that time. It was later that the smoke was pouring out, but nothing else had been done to it. I dont have a garage to work in or a large shed to put the scoot in. I will have to wait until it gets a bit warmer, and drier as I have lawns either side of the path where I can work on it.
yeah, must be rubbing under the plastic somewhere i guess take a look first at where the wires go along the engine mount pivot bolt and down the fork stem, places where wires are near moving parts, as they are the most likely culprits for bad wiring! i know the feeling about the cold, i live in norway and my garage isnt really a garage, more of a wooden shed with no power or heating
I have bought a vespa et2 so I will be selling or breaking the speedfight 2. I dont know what it is worth as it stands, but I have listed it on a swap site for cash or swaps. I am not too fussed really as I have the Bali ready for mot and a vespa coming at the weekend.
I think I would sooner have the speedfight, but I saw a vespa cheap and went for it. If the speedfight does not go, I will tackle it in the summer when the weather is warmer. I just dont have the drive in me to do anything with it yet. It might just be an easy fix and less than £10 to get ir running, but with two others running, I have a lot of time on my hands and a few projects that need finishing too.
