If I was in your situation,i would leave the downer vibe on the backburner, rethink the situation AFTER your op.,perspective might change.mk.

i have to change my whole life around now because of the condition (http://www.ehlersdanlosnetwork.org/vascular.html)
i was working as a motorcycle mechanic for a main dealer, and my whole life i have been doing mechanics/engine building. but my health has dropped considerably, i have some severe hip and knee problems in addition to the vascular problems, so now im having to change my career.
but i am trying to go self employed and starting up my own business selling super cubs (chinese licenced copies) but not sure how the rules are with it.
i have to assess the risks and the quality of life. riding bikes is the single best thing i can think of (except maybe sex...) so i have to weigh it up a little bit you know?... look at me getting all deep and stuff... anyway, back to the point about your op.... if the doctors say specifically and SIGN something saying you cannot ride, then if you get stopped riding, its like the same rules as having no licence....
