Not likely unless it was left outside in the rain etc and something has got into it.. but yes it can go stale and crystalize.. where do you think the expression "fresh fuel" comes from ;)

fuel will evaporate at a MUCH faster rate than it will go off... petrol can last years, its not the best, but it will run. its sat in the ground for millions of years, its metal fuel containers and dirty fuel tanks that make fuel "go off".. leaving a jerry can without a lid on is a seriously fucking stupid thing tho.. if left for a couple days in a room with no breze it will fully evaporate, and the spark from the light switch would be enough to ignite... bvasicly you would turn the light on and your garage could explode...

PETROL IS THE ONLY EXPLOSIVE YOU CAN LEGALLY BUY.. this does not mean its any more safe than any other explosive.. ALLWAYS store fuel correctly.

Petrol should be fine for 24 hours in the open as long as it doesnt get too contaminated.

If you leave it exposed to open air, it will absorb moisture and eventually evaporate.

As minor said, it'll last for years in a plastic fuel safe jerry can with the cap screwed on tightly.

If you are going to store petrol for a very very long time, its best to store it OFF the ground up on a shelf or something.
