I would be taking the tranny case off and giving the transmission components a look over as my 1st port of call :)

also when was the spark plug last changed?

Highly unlikly to be old petrol.. Ive ran petrol thats been sitting in a shed for over a year in a jerry can, without problems.

When you say loosing revs do you mean bogging down? If its getting stuck on full throttle then your throttle is sticking.

if it revs by itself...more than likely an air leak.

you would fix it by finding out where the air leak is, and putting it right :)

i.e a cracked/split inlet manifold, loose fitting carb, vac line off or split etc etc etc

Here's a diagnostic trick I learned working on aircraft: Get a can of WD-40 + attach the red plastic wand. Spray it on, and around, each part of your intake system. When your engine's idle speed suddenly changes, you've found the area where your leak is located. Gabe
