i was riding and my air filter fell off my bike. managed to find it and refit it, from then, if i don't throttle the bike while starting it, it will not turn on, and whilst the engine is running, if i don't give it a small ammount of throttle while at standstill then the bike will cut out. the air filter fell off again so i put another one on and the same problem. i was thinking jetting is the problem, but if thats the case, then it shouldnt have happened when i put the same air filter on once it came off. i'm thinking i hit a switch or lever on teh carb while trying to refit the filter. any ideas please guys?
If that was me i would turn the idle up a bit and see what its like then, try that, also clean out your jets and carb
With all carburation problems it really is beneficial to completely remove the carb from the bike, strip it down and clean it inside and out. blow the jets through and check they are free from grit/water/excessive oil whilst cleaning and it will tell you whats wrong with it. As your filter "fell" off, it 110% certainly dragged grit in from the tyre/engine area, maybe even water. And as you are running a filter as opposed to an airbox, the chances are its not jetted correctly for its current riding use and blowing back oil and clogging up the filter and carb. Throw a bit of water into the situation and your filter would become blocked instantly thus struggling and cutting out. Solution: strip, clean and rebuild carb, fit new filter or use filter cleaner for the old one and then go from there. You'll most likely find that its perfect and starts and runs easy (once you've remembered the fuel needs to fill the float bowl up again ) it may need a slight adjustment of the idle and your throttle cable tension.
same problem with me.. and airfilters.. just clean the carb. and mainly check that the manual choke is fully down! as mine wasnt, and that was the problem!!
tweak hit the nail on the head there. probably dirt/grit in the starter jet. if not id guess the idle mix is wrong (usually the case with 25mm carbs as people just bolt them on and dont ajust the idle mix as there usually fully wound in making a rich mixture at idle)
