any ideas why a new build 172cc is a bad starter? Once it's going, it's fine. Has anyone managed to get a starter motor to work with them?
My foot and hip is bruised!

What's the squish band width? May need a thicker base gasket to drop the compression a little. My 172 does it but have a second go and it's fine.

do you have a pissy little 50 battery? 172's dont like starting off the starter motor, its a fixed starter pulley. the 4t stuff has a 2 plate sprung system to give the motor a bit more wind up torque. should start with a good kick, bruised your hip? are you 6 stone or something? probably more technique than anything, press down till you feel the engine bite, then hard kick, should take a single kick, any more than 2 or three kicks and theres something about to break, rings usually, possibly crappy oil seals loosing compression.. will be something relativly simple that WILL run lean/hot and kill the engine eventually. a good starting bike is ahappy bike

As Minor say's, a good battery is essential. You could try taking the rear bulb out then try the electric start !! If it helps with starting, try it and let us know.

I've reset the squish and it's much better now. I'm using a new ET4 battery but I haven't tried the starter since, I'll wire it back in and see.
