Hey folks, as the title says the back brake isn't returning all the way, I dont mean the spring with the bolt through it I mean the actual bit that goes into the wheel, this is causing me a lot of drag lol, when I kicked it all the way back manually yesterday the ped was flying compared to how it was. Is this a wd40 job or otherwise? Also is the variator in the right hand side of the bike next to the exhaust? Do I just unbolt the lot to take the restrictor off?

Might be the springs in the brake holding the plates? An the variator is behind the kickstart case, just undo the bolts then either buzz gun or get a locking tool and undo the front pulley an slide it off. There is a ring on the bar an slid that off an its done :)

If you dont have the tools. On a yam engine you can hold a screwdriver in the font pulley, then undo the bolt

The brake is probably the shaft from inside to out thats seized. Right way of doing it will be to remove the drum cover and strip out the shaft, clean it up with a bit of wire wool etc and the inside of the hole, grease it and reassemble....or you could try flooding it with WD40 whilst rotating it back and forth as far as it'll go. Sometimes you'll get lucky and it'll free off

If you're intent on removing the variator without the proper tools or a buzz gun, you're better off trapping the gear with a piece of wood to save damaging the teeth with a screwdriver etc

I take it that you've got drum brakes, the shoes may need replacing. As the shoes wear the cams which operate them tend to stick when they approach the limit of the travel. I would strip them down, replace the shoes if needed then reassemble using some copper slip on the moving parts, be sparing as you don't want to contaminate the linings.
