mroning fella`s i`m a bit new to this. i have aquired an AY50 katana on a V plate off a family friend and needs a bit of work doing to it. engine mods are all sorted, am planning on a malossi 70cc kit, already have the variator, rollers and technigas pipe. i am going to add a polini gear up kit and heavy duty drive belt as well. A few questions if you don`t mind 1. do i need a different cdi unit or is the one thats on it ok? it says ducati mechannica on it. 2. i`m having trouble getting the forks apart to put new seals in. can this be done as i can find no service manual online and they are a tad stubborn in coming apart. no amount of violence is freeing off the damper rods and as they appear to be a sealed unit, am i missing something? 3.the shop i am using has 3 gear up kits advertised, malossi, polini and another cheaper type. which one is the best/most suitable?
well i had a 2004 katana and it was restricted by the cdi!!! if you get a suzuki manual u can cut/chop off a section off the cdi if removes the restriction!! like on aa et4 50cc vespa !! ansd then fill up the holw with silicon !!! or just get an aftermarket cdi that isnt restricted !! i couldnt get more than 29mph on that bike even after removing the variator and carb restrictor!! then i found out it had a restrcited CDI! fork you just know or don't know what ur doing sorry!! and the gears well u want the most adapted gears to the kit that you are putting on !! the brands dont matter its the amount of teeth u go up or down that count!! look at the difference betwween the amount of teeth between each gear set!! if you go for a sport 70cc dont get the highest gears otherwise ur bike will struggle to pull them !! anyway !! For rest look up threads/posts!
am a bit unsure about the cdi, as data seems abit hazy on this subject when i have a look on the web, and as for the forks, i`ve had enough sets apart in my time racing bikes to know when something is wrong. i was only asking for a bit of advice, not an insult. anyone who wants to offer an opinon, i could do with some help.
cdi needs changing on these. the seals are pritty simple to do, the hard bit is removing the bottom of the fork leg (the bit that holds the wheel) from the stantion) the chrome lookin bar that it sits on) without marking ether.. as you were told you ether know how to do this or you dont, its not a case of being told some magic remedy, there a pig, you can EASLIY fuck them and you should not do a fork rebuild unless first supervised (different if somones there showing you) some things you just cant discribe on a website, some thing s you should just pay somone else to fix/replace as service items.. treat scooter forks the same as car shock absorbers, you dont rebuild them, you bin them and buy new ones.
from experience. Sell it. buy a Piaggio. Cdis dont need changing i have one in the shed if you really do need another one aswell as a nearly full panel set and a few bits if you do need any a decent 70cc cylinder by a reputable seller is ridiculous priced like £155 odd on a piaggio thats 15bhp money
cheers gents there is a scrappers for bikes not far from me so i`ll try him first. if not i suppose it`ll have to be evilbay. cheers for your advice of selling it for a piaggio, but seen as i got the katana for nowt i might as well spend a few quid to get a few quid back at resale time. cheers from dan
so do the forks, tidy it up (to stock) its worth more stock than modified (unless you find an idiot) they all are worth more stock trust me... shot it and buy another bike, whatever you do to it it will never be all that quick. waste oif time and money. if it was free then selling now will give you 100% profit..
thats what i did sold because i wasnt easy to derestrict!! katana mlooks nice but dont got quick!!! if u know what u doing first you wouldnt need advice and second if u cant an online service manual its trhat it don't exist !! i have a worshop manula for the katana in our workshop called the ay50 thats 250 pages thick !! good luck finding it on the internet !! the manual is more trhan £100 pound or do like everyone else buy a haynes!! £10 if that!!
a quick update, have got it stripped down today. took the drive cover off to find it already has a malossi variator(mentioned before), heavy duty belt, malossi clutch and i suspect a gear up kit as well as the shaft looks very clean and new with grease round it, this suggests someone has had it in bits. well impressed with that, all i need is the big bore kit and a carb. cheers from dan
