Hi all, something interesting/confusing is happening when I try to test my auto choke, in that the current disappears as soon as I connect it. I took the metal contacts out of both plugs to double check this - say I have the positives hooked up but not the negatives. I can measure between the unhooked negative on the loom, and the positive on the choke, and see 9 volts. The moment I hook up those negatives the reading drops to zero (and no, the meter probe hasn't come unhooked at the same time).

I have continuity across the choke's two wires, and I have solid, clean connections from the loom connectors to the choke connectors.

Where does that current disappear to, and what does it mean?

    Thanks!

    choke is a heater element.

it only works when the bike is running, ie even with ignition on theres no current flowing, when bikes running the current is taken to the ehater section and that warms up a wax like substance as it warms up it expands and forces the chokes plunger downwards. remove power the choke starts to cool, the liquid starts to solidify and shrinks, the choke plunger then draws upwards .

heres a video showing one getting deconstructed so you can see the workings

Cheers, I was all ready to disagree with you because as I say, there was 9v current going to the connector without starting the bike. But I tested it with the choke reinstalled and the bike running and whaddya know, the current doesn't disappear any more. Thanks!
