Morning all, I'm wondering if anyone can give me some advice. We have a 06-07 piaggio zip 2 stroke 50cc, there are 4 of us riding it for a 5hr offroad endurance charity event. the bikes all prepped and ready to go except a few bits to sort this week. what I'm looking for is to have decent power between 0-20mph as lets face it anything over 20mph on an offroad track is going to hurt on a scooter! so what we have currently on the bike(it came like this) is, TT exhaust jetted malossi belt malossi filter 5g rollers. So am i right in thinking we need to put lighter rollers in, 3g?? and a heavier torque spring in? The way i see it and this maybe completely wrong is by putting in lighter rollers it will engage quicker and putting a harder torque spring in it holds it shut longer meaning it will pull away easier? please correct me if this is way off? The clutch springs are standard from what i can see, would putting harder ones in be beneficial? The bike runs spot on but for 3 of us (heavier 3) it takes 10-15ft of building momentum before it kicks in so i was hoping to reduce that. i was looking at buying lighter rollers, a set of 3 torque springs that have different ratings and maybe some harder clutch springs, do you think we will be able to achieve what we are looking for? oh and one other thing, we whacked a new piston and rings in. on dismantle there was no head gasket???? i put one back in on reassemble but there was no leaks prior so would this have been some attempted at changing squish height or something?? cheers
On some piaggio motors there is no gasket! I'd advise a std exhaust to give you some torque low down, as you say you won't be going fast! A completely stock just derestricted Zip will be great!
Lighter rollers take more engine revs to throw out and keep out. Heavier rollers the opposite. Clutch springs have the same effect, but on the clutch slippers. Harder springs means the clutch has to spin faster to throw the slippers out and catch the clutch bell. I would agree with Marsh really, in that having a standard but de-restricted zip would be better. Using it on a dirt track with the "power band" coming in too soon will be detrimental to the purpose. The rear wheel will spin up too soon to gain traction and you'll slide all over the place. The extra power you should already have generated by fitting the Leo exhaust and re-jetting should be adequate for the purpose. Unless of course it's a flat out race, then.........................
Cheers for the advice guys, ill have a look for a standard pipe. I've ordered some different springs and some different roller weights to have a play with as there not loads of money. we are all motocrossers so want as much as we can get. we fitted nobbly tyres so it grips surprisingly well. well i don't think we will just want to ride round and enjoy the scenery.
unfortunately its max 50cc 2t and 90cc 4t. the power is fine its just the delay in setting of that we want to change. When we got the bike it was fine, it kicked in a little better but since doing the piston and various over bits it seems to lag a tad before the band kicks in. i assume thats what its meant to to when performance bits are added, then you have to match the cvt to work with it. next thing is trying to get the forks as good as they can be, it doesn't like jumps that much!!!
