Its been a while since I posted here! First time I've been on a scoot since my crash - my Dad surprised me and bought me a second hand Piaggio x8 125 cause the third party insurers are being complete and utter cocks. Anyhow.. I took it for a test spin to Hebden Bridge, some 12 miles away from home and pulled up for a cig. Hoped back on-board and the engine doesn't start.. Okay I think, it might have overheated and want to cool down (previous experience from Chinese scoots) so I give it an hour to cool down. After waiting and waiting, and it just sounding like a hair-dryer when I try start it I called the AA who recovered me home. The guy my Dad bought it from came over to inspect it, thinking it might be the starter motor or something.. and takes it apart at 11PM in pitch black lol. Turns out something called a "starter ring" has lost all of its teeth on the middle spinny part lol.. So now I've gotta wait to try get one of these from somewhere.. Here's an stock picture of the exact one. Best hope that Santa brings me something nice ey!
Yeah will be! Oh, and not sure why this has gone to General Tuning, I was meant to post it in General Discussion if someone would be kind enough to move it? .
Hope your talking about the outer teeth on that gear (spinney thing.....LOL) If it's the inner teeth, (the middle of that spinney thing) then that means that the splines on the crank have probably stripped as well! Also if it is the outer teeth, then you might want to inspect the starter bendix as that is where it engages to turn the engine when cranking over
i asked him all this about it being the crank and he said the cranks fine its just the thing pictured but on 1 of my peds the threads stripped on crank and that was end of life untill i got a new crank
Might want to have a look at that yourself, or get someone who knows to have a look for you, just to be sure. If it goes again 2 months down the line, do you think the previous owner will be as accommodating as he is now?
thats what am thinking the previous owners just wants a quick fix like on a speedfight 2 i had the crank threads got stripped so previous owner said he will fit the parts if i got em n he basically tried to bodge it with the old gaskets still in place when i got it back only reason i found out there where old gaskets was because a few days later it started leaking 2t oil from all the seals so got it fixed by a propper garage and sold it same day thought im not having and more probs with this n i'll go up later on when hes not busy and have a look at this bike seen as he dont live too far from me and i will try get some pics if you could have a look and give us your verdict that would be great
Of course, but without seeing the thing in person it may be difficult to judge the condition of it. Best guide i can give you is to check that splines all look in decent condition, not battered like a stripped screw thread. If the inside of the starter gear has stripped, then look for where it may have flattened the splines on the crank
Can I just say that you deserve some kind of medal for using a two wheeled vehicle in the North of England ? Electric starters suck. Just remove the thing, replace it with a washer of the appropriate size and use the kick start !
