After new variator surging when throttle wide open

2003 Gilera Runner VXR200

Polini D3 variator with the supplied 11.8 gram rollers.
The bike had this variator before..but when the belt snapped last week, I looked at it and the old one had flat spots on the rollers and wear on the ramps.

So ordered a new identical one Poling D3 30 degree High Speed

Old rollers weigh less than the new ones as close as I could tell on industrial scales..but I assumed that was just due to age and wear of the rollers , material lost on the flat spots.


Any way , now if I accelerate off at full wide open throttle I get surging ...

slow acceleration is oK, BUT IF i open it up it does not pull smoothly...

any ideas?
