Hello All, I'm one of us US guys with a Zuma that I've been tricking out. One of the things we can do is to get a set of Aerox rims and put them on our Zuma's. The question I have is this : I have purchased a set of used Aerox rims that I want to get powder coated. To get them powder coated I need to take the bearings out of the front rim, but am having extreme difficulty getting them out. 1) Any suggestions on how to get them out on my own without destroying them? 2) Where can I purchase or acquire new bearings to press in when I get the rims back from powder coating? Thanks everyone!!
you can heat around it up with a hot air gun, and then knock the bearing out with a socket. not sure where you will get new ones from, but they will have a code printed onto them, which you can call a bearing company and tehy will source them for you.
AAAAAAAH. I didn't think about the code bit. How long do you supposed I'd have to use the heat gun for before I can take a whack at them? 5mins? 10mins? thanks!
erm....not even that long to be honest mate.....maybe a minute at most. depends on the intensity of the heat. i used a blowtorch for my bearing changes and only needed to heat it up for about 45 seconds and the bearings just needed a tiny tap to get out.
easyparts.nl and head for the genuine parts tab as for heating them, you want them to break the bond if possible, but weve taken bearings out at work without heating them so its not the end of the world if you dont heat them enough, as for the socket, you need to have it touching the most outer part of the bearing as possible, but you should really use a bearing extractor
Best off finding a screwdriver long enough to knock the bearing out from the inside. most bearing specialists stock the size you need, they will be 6004 or 6204 i think (2 rs at the end possibly, just means that the bearing has 2 rubber seals)
We don't have bearing extractors readily available here in the states. Mechanic shops usually have them, but most mechanics are stingy and don't even want to touch a small rim like the Aerox. I'll try the heat and tap method. They should just tap straight through right?
yea jsut heat round the outside and get a socket that fits nicely on the oute bearing race. and hit it with a hammer :w00t: you may not even need to use heat with getting it out......but it makes it a hell of a lot easier getting them back in.
They say KOYO - 6300zz on the outside of the bearing. I'm going to try and knock them out on my lunch break. There is an axle rod between the two bearings. I'm assuming it's safe to line up the rod on the opposite bearing and tap away?
yeah, thats fine, the code (6300) is the one you need, any bearing specialist will be able to match you a pair up.
K, so I went home and tried the heat gun method. Heated the outside rim area, placed a deep-impact socket over the bearing (one that matched the bearing OD almost perfectly) and banged away. The bearings did not budge. So then I tried the heat gun directly on the bearing itself. Again, it would not budge. I'm ready to just rip the damn things out. They wouldn't be glued in would they? Also, I'm going to need to buy a new set of tires for the rims once I get them powder coated. I've never had to buy Aerox tires before, just the Zuma ones. Do you guys happen to know the tire sizes for both front and back when I order? I currently have the Pirelli SL-26's on my Zuma now, would you recommend a better tire? Thank you all for your help and quick responses!!!
you need to nock from the inside outwards... hence the screwdriver pushes the centre out enough to get onto the inside of the bearing.. correct tool is a bearing puller but most of these are shit unless you buy the 300+ quid sets
Really? So you guys over in the UK run the Michelin Pilot Sports over Pirelli's or Dunlop's? What's the major difference that you notice? Like I said earlier, I have the Pirelli SL-26's now, and they seem pretty good.
