Hi all... Need advice for my speedy, I came off two months on black ice and ever since then I haven't felt 'safe' on my beloved lewy !!! I will ride quite often but I shit bricks most of the time lol... My lewy is quite fast and pretty much standard except for his exhaust lol

    Hi Tracey,

Best advice is keep at it, the feeling is natural and it will fade away. Hitting ice sure isn't a nice experience so anyone is going to shit bricks for a while afterwards! Remember too the warm weather is coming, so no ice!

Try to think it all out too, could you have avoided the ice? OK we can't 'see' black ice, but we can sometimes read the road and figure where it might be. On a country lane in the shade of a tree, it could be lurking there? Any corner when ice is around is much more dangerous than a straight road too!

If you can rationalise the accident it helps with the head side of things.

Next up you need your confidence back. After an accident we all get tense for a while back on the bike, it'll feel kind of wrong if your muscles are all tensed up. Try to work on relaxing. Remind yourself coming off on ice is probably a once in a lifetime experience, now you have done it, you'll be much more cautious in icy conditions.

I often treat myself to some new safety gear after an off too, it just helps to feel better about it!

Lol I had full gear on.. Gloves leather pants and my jacket and obviously my helmet.. I wrecked my mirror and side fairings :( I fucked up my hip and my back still hurts !!! Thank you for the advice :) the ice was all over the road.. I checked lol I came off on a dual carriage way and thankfully there was no one around except for a car on the other side of the road and talked to me afterwards.. I was only doing forty an hour aswell which was ok I guess.. Still scary as hell but I still got back on my bike and drove to where i was going then drove the bike home

I binned a bike on the A5183 out of Radlett years ago, dead straight but wet greasy road and the front end just went, the last thing I saw was the speedo reading which I can't really mention in public! then it was an episode of seeing sky/ground sky/ground sky/ground for what seemed like eternity!

It seriously put the shits up me for a long long time, but I'm still out there 20 years later enjoying bikes ;)

Have you had the bike professionally checked over too or at least ridden by a friend? Make sure it's all straight and good. I mentioned it the other week on another thread, just check Lewy is nice and rideable 'cos if anything is up with the bike after your off it won't help with building confidence.

It's the old thing though of getting back on and doing. After my off on A5183 the bike was wrecked, but a courier mate just happened by half an hour after the accident. He took me back into the London on the back of 900 Diversion - if he hadn't, I'm not sure I would have ridden ever again!

I haven't had it professionally checked but my biker/mechanic mate checked over it and he said lewy is fine but I don't think he is.. He runs fine but he veers to the left a bit... But I will put that right when it's not raining lol I know he's gots single arm suspension so that doesn't really help my confidence much

It's a bit of a list, but here are some are the faults I've had to rectify on bikes even after minor offs:

Handlebars not aligned with front wheel

    Handlebars bent

Head stock bearings - been loosened in accident

Head stock bearings - become too tight in accident

Bent suspension components - twisted forks, banana shaped rear shock

    Bent frame.

Not trying to frighten you with the list, but these are the sort of faults that won't help much with the feel of the bike when you are riding and getting confident again.

    Obviously you've got a bit of a go in you,when it comes to riding,you've had a boo-boo. :) -
Still riding, from your attitude get probs. for a fair while yet-
S..t happens, you will / or / may come off now, again, future ,part of the deal afraid-
come off a ......few times/self,depends on how realistic you wanna take an overview of the whole matter. ;) .

My funniest accident was ridiculous at the same time. Rode all summer with fingerless leather gloves, they were great. Then it got a bit colder so got out my winter gloves from the year before.

Hopped on bike, blasted off as usual, approached the back of a double parked Jaguar.

Went for the controls, messed it all up, the gloves were really stiff from not being worn.

Hit the back of the Jag and literally went right over the top and ended up in a heap on the floor in front of it.

Guy gets out of Jag, and asks me 'why did you do that?'

    Damned if I know. ;)

It all happened less than 30 yards from my front door!

Oh it was! Things then escalated as my flat mate had heard the crash and she came out and had a go at him!

He later tried to claim the rear sub-frame of his car was damaged in the accident - he lost, my insurance company argued as he was double parked, he was the cause of the accident!

Poor guy, I kind of felt sorry for him!

Yep, car mechanic mate of mine said there was no way I could have bent the sub-frame hitting it with a bike, more likely the Jag was a rust bucket and the owner just fancied it replaced on the insurance.

Idiot's like that, what costs the rest of us £'s,up here in London-

I had a really bad "off" 6 years ago on the way to work one morning. I hit something in the road which made me lose control at about 50 mph. I hit a fence, 2 trees before coming to a halt in the middle of the road. The bike was in 2 halfs & I was in a right state. I basically split myself in half, pelvis split in 2 & fractured my back. I didn't work for 4 and a half months. I bought another bike 2 months after the accident & had to ride it nearly 70 miles back home. I was still on crutches at the time & my son had to help me off the thing when I got home.
I have never been so frightened about getting on a bike in my life & I was shaking like a leaf, but had to tell myself I would be fine..
It was wet & windy when I came off & I still struggle now to negotiate right hand bends when it's raining, my right arm stiffens up & I have to tell myself to stop it, but, think positive & you will be fine, the brain is a very strange thing.
A year after my accident I bought a race bike & went on track, so, if you can overcome your fear (which takes time), you will get back into it.
